I ogled Lhoris as he straddled my thigh. The glowing light of the hammock shone upwards on his slate skin, an unearthly glow against the black backdrop of night behind him. Long silver hair draped over his shoulders like moonlight and the fine, white speckles across sleek, athletically muscled torso were almost an echo of the stars in the night sky. A long, layered chain with beads of crystal and sliver glistened around his neck, and I could finally see that the pearlescent tattoo ended at his navel. He was lovely. Dark elf man. Art by me!

With that done, I found Lobikno and asked for an update on the crew. My brother had a gift for ferreting out sedition. He could sense malcontent and read it like a map-not by any special arcane inclination, but because he had the instinct of a survivor. He covered us in shadow and silence as we stepped away from camp and into the dark of the forest.

Ozanna If Arlo didn't shut his mouth, I was going to climb over the bar, shove my money down his throat and take the change out of his ass. He was just standing there, chatting away with another customer, an infuriatingly easy smile deepening the lines of his aged face while I flailed and failed to get his attention. But it wasn't until the third I'll be with you soon gesture that I hoisted myself up on the stool rung intending to hurl a copper at him when my gaze fell upon the tip boxes. There were four of them, small and wooden, secured to the wall behind the bar, one for each of his regular tavern maids. Including one for his wife, Tabi, who was the cook. Tips were easily stolen from the tables, so it was Arlo's policy to collect them along with payment and place the money in the proper box. From my elevation, I could see each name painted on the lid above the coin slot. I eyed the one marked "Tabi" and tested the weight of one copper coin in my hand. Then I leaned over, braced between the stool and bar top, and with the flick of the wrist, tossed the copper. It slid across the lid and teetered for a moment on the edge of the slot before finally toppling in to thump against the wooden bottom. The next toss had a little more oomph to it, so the second coin had enough momentum to slide right in. I was contemplating what adjustments to make in delivering the heavier silver piece when Arlo finally approached me.

I banged a fist against the front wall of the carriage, the prearranged signal that we needed to stop. Emmelina lunged for the door, and I almost missed catching her shoulder. "I'm sorry, lady, but we need to wait for the carriage to stop before you open the door." She pursed her lips and sat down but continued to fidget while we waited. Then I accompanied her, and the maids, to some bushes for privacy. Judith and Eve exchanged distraught glances when they saw the girl wasn't locked away in her mind, but they didn't seem to have anything to say about it. Just like every roadside privy break, I stood watch for intruders while they saw to their business, waiting to attend to my own needs once Emmelina was safely returned to the carriage. This time though, when we moved to return ... Emmelina was gone. One moment she was at my elbow, pointed toward the carriage, then, with a backward step, she slipped out of my peripheral vision. And when I looked back, all that remained of her were her shoes and hose. The maids squealed, which drew a guard, Marcus, to our makeshift privy.

With that settled, I rolled my eyes and returned my attention to Arlo, who, with a dwarven grancestor, was familiar with such speculation. "But now that you've revealed that little secret, they won't find my feat nearly as impressive." He scoffed. "You know I have to play my part here." "Oh aye," nodded the ruddy man beside me. "The jolly fuckin' inn keeper." Arlo nodded in agreement before placing his palms against the edge of the bar and leaning in conspiratorially. "It doesn't work on you, is all. So I put my time where the money is." And in that, he wasn't wrong. Arlo was an old acquaintance, but we'd established a somewhat adversarial relationship during my infrequent visits to the Hungry Harpy. He was set on trying to loosen my purse strings while I was determined to spend only what I had to.

I groaned when I realized which tale she was telling. One of the human bandits asked her to start over, "so the Captain.." He nodded to Handsy-Elf. " can hear the whole thing." Not one of his companions seemed put out at having the tale restarted. She regaled us with the wyvern incident, acting out as much of it as she could. Her impression of the beasts was dead on, though, down to the way they moved. The entire gathering was transfixed by her telling. So much that even Handsy-Elf forgot about hair pins occasionally. One man even sighed a quiet "aww" when she described how lovely and sweet the hatchling had been. It earned him a look of disdain from one of his elven companions. Then she got to my part of the story. Hearing the embellishment of my heroism was painful. Emmelina cast herself as a damsel in distress and made me sound like some fearless twat of a knight. She held a massive stick in place of the tiny dagger I waved in the wyvern's face. Her expression was fierce while mine had probably been pale and clammy. The bandits' sneaky glances my way were difficult to miss. If I could have hidden my reddening face in my hands, I would have. Emmelina ended the tale with our daring escape, my apparent outrunning of the beast. So, I was also the twat knight's horse. I rolled my eyes and sighed.

You can cuddle with Lobikno for one night.” She gave me a rakish smile and kissed me on the very tip of my nose. And for a moment I was stunned speechless. It was such a small thing to catch me off guard, but damn it, none of my previous conquests had done anything so sweet. And in public, no less. It was adorable. “Do that again, please?” I begged. She blushed and huffed a laugh before humoring me. My heart rose in my chest, so light that I thought it would lift from my breast like dandelion fluff floating on a summer breeze. Ozanna I learned a lot in our first week of travel. First, the trip from Cudcona to the North Road was faster by nearly two days with a single carriage instead of a full caravan. Second, the older knight in charge, Steffon, had a beautiful baritone singing voice and • an unfortunate stomach ailment. He was also sweet on Judith. Third, Judith was having none of it. And finally, undistracted paranoia does not pair well with long, boring carriage rides. One would think the former should settle the latter, but I still couldn't shake the feeling that something was off, and I was fit to climb the walls. I just couldn't put a finger on the source of my wariness. Perhaps it was the others' pointed avoidance of the princess that left me uneasy. And the poor girl was nearly catatonic, just watching the trees outside her window. She didn't speak or move unless directed, and even then, I had to lead her by the hand. The worst part, though, was that nobody else seemed to care.

I gasped. "What is that?" His smile broadened then and he dropped his hand. The little flame hovered in the air where he left it. "It's just a fairy light. Any elf can manage it. Even a half elf," he explained with a hint of amusement. I heard the slosh of a bottle and the scent of vinegar stung my nose. He poured it on a fresh cloth and dabbed it on the wound. I refused to wince when the burning sensation made my eye water. I scoffed. "My elf half didn't come with magic." He quirked an eyebrow at me before turning his attention to threading a fine, curved needle. It was an odd, close moment. Just the two of us contained in the fairy light. The only sound outside it was the soothing babble of the stream. It was the first opportunity I had to look at him. I'd merely been observing before, gaging his intent and studying his actions in my ongoing threat assessment. But without danger looming over me, I could finally notice how his long face made sense with his build. That his eyes were large and bright despite being deep set. That they sparkled with amusement. And there was a smattering of white freckles across his straight nose and high cheeks. I was no maiden—far from it. That face though, with the broad mischievous grin bookended by those dimples, sent butterflies darting around my stomach. And that hadn't happened since I was a girl. "I think you're mistaken," he said, meeting my gaze again.

I was so done. Not that the assholes by the fire had delivered much of a beating. They'd just been toying with me, really. Big stupid cats pushing me about like a stunned mouse. Except, the mouse in this scenario was exhausted and at the end of her fucking rope. Lobikno kept a watchful eye over me once the others dispersed, his gravelly voice occasionally startling me awake when I dozed off. Otherwise, I sat in sullen silence at his feet, waiting for whatever they had in store for me. It wasn't long before handsy-fucking-elf yanked me to my feet by the shirtfront and slung me over his shoulder again. I was still sore from our previous struggle and, well, my day overall. His leather pauldron dug into my middle again and pressed hard against the ribs it bruised earlier. My head pounded as it dangled upside down and I struggled to breathe.

I couldn't shake the feeling luck was against me, though. But that was a longstanding flaw in my personality. Growing up in the Rooted Temple's dormitory, I'd been an outlier in many ways, but that one wore on my caregivers. So the matrons encouraged me to focus on the positive when that sense of dread came calling. While it never changed the outcome, it at least made the time leading up to disaster a little more pleasant. "We have a plan," I muttered to myself, before picking up the reins. "It's not even a bad plan. Better than the wyvern plan, at least. This can work out." But that turned out to be overly optimistic.

"A gentleman would give his lady gifts and perform kind acts out of love," Judith added. "Like the assortment of sweets Duke Nicolas sent. An excellent gift." The princess smiled. "The note said they were all his favorites." The halfie nodded. "I've only ever been plied with alcohol. And cheese. But, dukes and the like are a little outside my station." The princess cocked her head, a curiously bird like movement, and peered back at the trussed roast. "Has Lhoris given you sweets?" The halfie closed her eyes and rubbed her face, growling into her bound hands. I chuckled and saw the opportunity to have a little fun. "Lhoris is a terrible dark elf, but this," I said, gesturing to the ropes, "is how our kind courts a female." The halfie and maids turned to look at me in horror, but the princess furrowed her brow in thought. "So, the rope is like sweets?" "Yes. The ladies run away before they get to know you if you don't tie them up. And these are fine enchanted ropes." I explained, touching the toe of my boot to the rope at the halfie's ankles. It came undone in a fluid motion. I did it a second time, and the rope flowed about her ankles. "If you had enemies that he could kill, he might even bring you their heads." Again, the three older women gaped at me in horror and revulsion. "Ah!" the princess exclaimed. "That would be a gift and an act of love!" Then the looks of disgust turned to her.

I met his gaze without batting an eye. "You're the one who told me that the castle staff will turn me away if I'm late." "I was almost done. Has it been that long since you've left your forest, or did you just forget humans can't do shit like that?" He waved a blocky hand at the tip box. The temptation to toss the silver piece was almost irresistible-to just flick it between his fingers and into the coin slot-but it wasn't really necessary. That and I was less likely to get my change. I wasn't so worried about the coppers since Tabi had earned them. I tipped my head and glanced at the other patrons sitting down the bar. "They didn't know I'm not all-human." And then my fellow patrons muttered among themselves, guessing at my possible partial heritage. "Too tall to have dwarf blood." "Not enough hair." "Has to be elf." "Maybe. Do you think fairy?" "Nah, not dressed like that. Heard they're fancy." Not that there was anything wrong with my clothes. The leather pants and vest were a little worn, but the plain linen blouse didn't have holes in it. I'd checked before putting it on that morning. But they were correct. Not that anyone knew what a fairy looked like, anyway.

"You have magic; it's just not a lot," I explained. "I witnessed your use of it twice before this morning. And since you've been around Lobikno and me, it's finally strong enough for you to smell." She scoffed and frowned and then eyed me. "No. What?" "When you launched the door at me," I said, allowing myself a wry grin, "and again when you were cutting down my treacherous crew." My gaze flicked over the pink lines on her left arm, scars where Rhyfon's sword had sliced as she parried. She may not have survived that encounter if not for the little boost being around other elves had given her. "You're swift as a fox, love, and you've been using a touch of magic to do it." "How?" she asked. I didn't have a straightforward answer. "You've heard me talk about innate, natural magic. Elves experience it like water. It flows through us, and everyone has their own current ..." I trailed off when I realized my explanation made little sense to her. "It's like breathing. You just do."
