In Final Fantasy XVI, Titan is the colossal Eikon of Earth, introduced at the Battle of Nysa. He’s named after the Titans of Greek myth - gods who preceded the Olympians. Among them was Atlas, a ferocious leader sentenced to hold up the sky, then turned into a mountain.

In Norse mythology, the chief deity Odin often wanders among men in disguise. One such disguise is believed to be a boatman named Hárbard (Greybeard). This is reflected in Final Fantasy XVI, where the silver-haired Harbard is an "extension" of Barnabas, the Dominant of Odin.

In the Christian Bible, Jesus visits Martha and performs a miracle to restore her brother Lazarus to life, signifying Christ's power over death. This is why FFXVI's Rosaria - whose Eikon is Phoenix, the resurrection bird - contains both the Lazarus District and Martha's Rest.

The Völsunga saga, a famous Norse epic, includes the hero Sigurd slaying a wingless dragon named Fáfnir. He was once a man, cursed for murdering his father, Hreidmarr, to claim his gold. Fafnir of the North is fought during FFXVI, as is the larger Hreidmar dragon in a DLC.

In Chinese culture, the dragon (loong) and phoenix (fenghuang) can symbolise justice and loyalty, especially in the imperial household. When seen together, they represent opposing and balancing forces. This is reflected in FFXVI when Phoenix rises to quell Bahamut’s rampage.

In Hindu cosmology, the primary role of Lord Shiva is to destroy the impure universe so that it can be reborn. This is reflected in Final Fantasy XVI's Jill, the Dominant of Shiva, who helps Clive to destroy the harmful Mothercrystals so they can rebuild a better world for all.

In Greek myth, the god Dionysus is associated with winemaking, conquering death, and leading a retinue of beings that were once people. This mirrors Genesis, who commands an army of mutated SOLDIERs, is believed to have been resurrected, and invented Banora White apple juice.

In Norse mythology, Nidhögg is a dragon who lives in the main spring of Niflheim, responsible for punishing the spirits of murderers. Nibelheim’s inn in FFVII Rebirth - located by the water tower - is called the Nidhogg Hotel, where Sephiroth stays before slaying the townsfolk.

In FFVII Remake, the Pride and Joy Prototype drops Götterdämmerung upon its defeat, just as its successor Proud Clod drops Ragnarok in the OG. Götterdämmerung is a 19th century opera, a retelling - and thus ‘remake’ - of the prophecy of the Norse apocalypse, Ragnarök.

In Hinduism, Chirada and Suparna are aliases of the winged deity Garuda, while Aruna is attested to be his brother. Buddhism, meanwhile, describes Garudas as birdlike humanoids. This is why Chirada, Suparna, and Aruna all appear as egis of the Eikon Garuda in FFXVI.

In Scottish folklore, the cait sith (cat sith, singular) are supernatural felines associated with death. Many believed they would steal the soul from a corpse before its burial. This is why Cait Sith first properly appears in Rebirth in the graveyard outside the Haunted Hotel.

In Norse mythology, Odin values knowledge above all else and obtains immense wisdom by sacrificing one of his eyes. This is reflected in the summon’s updated design for both Crisis Core Reunion and FFVII Rebirth, where the mask of his armoured helmet conceals his right eye.

During Final Fantasy XVI, Clive and Gav find Edda, a pregnant survivor of the atrocities in Waloed. It is she who explains the Arche myth, a foretold doom that resembles the Norse Ragnarök. As it happens, the main sources of Norse lore are the Poetic Edda and Prose Edda books.

In FF Tactics, the Scriptures of Germonique is a hidden book that contradicts the teachings of the Church. It was written by a disciple that betrayed St Ajora. This reflects the Gnostic Christian texts discovered in Egypt in 1945, which included the so-called Gospel of Judas.

In Final Fantasy Tactics, Ramza fights the demon Belias, associated with the Aries (Ram) Stone and who calls himself the Devil. ‘Belias/Belial’ is a term used in the Hebrew Bible to sometimes mean ‘wickedness’, which Christians personify as Satan, who is said to have ram’s horns.
