Their professors and colleagues will begin holding weekly vigils until they are returned ***Visuals: black-clad faculty will gather in silent vigil on multiple university campuses to hold photographs of abductees*** New York City, Washington, DC, and Somerville, MA - It has been two months since recent Columbia graduate Mahmoud Khalil was abducted from the lobby of his apartment building as his pregnant wife watched in horror. It has been seven weeks since Georgetown postdoctoral researcher Badar Khan Suri was seized outside his home. It has been six weeks since Tufts graduate student Rümeysa Öztürk was snatched from the street by masked agents. Still held in detention in Texas and Louisiana, these scholars are accused of no crime, facing only baseless charges of antisemitism for speaking against Israel's devastating war in Gaza. University leaders have yet to forcefully condemn these attacks or the lies behind them. But Mahmoud, Badar and Rümeysa are not forgotten by their colleagues, professors, and fellow students. And we will gather every week on campus to bear witness to these abductions until every one of them comes home. Conclusion For the foregoing reasons, the government's motion for a stay of Ms. Ozturk's transfer to ICE custody within the District of Vermont is denied. As the Court established in its April 18 Opinion, "Ms. Ozturk has presented viable and serious habeas claims which warrant urgent review on the merits." Id. at 73. Any unnecessary delay of Ms. Ozturk's transfer to this District would likely disrupt or delay the Court's proceedings, potentially prolonging the very detention that is at the heart of this case. Meanwhile, Ms. Ozturk's return to Vermont would not unduly burden the government and would restore the status quo at the time of the order from the District Court in Massachusetts. The Court ordered that Ms. Ozturk be returned to Vermont precisely so that the Court could resolve the habeas petition as expeditiously as possible, and the Court intends to do so.
