I was patient and now actually got a ticket for day 2 of Brussels even though the sale opened up more than 2 hours ago! ARMY, keep trying if you didn't manage to get a ticket yet! There's still hope!

If Adorno is right, then pleasant art is a contradiction. Art must make things unfamiliar, disrupt, perplex, and even cause pain. Art dwells somewhere else. The home of art is in the unfamiliar. It is precisely this estrangement that creates the aura of an artwork. Pain is the fissure through which the absolute Other enters. It is the negativity of the absolute Other that allows art to tell a counter-story against the dominant order. By contrast, what gives satisfaction merely perpetuates the same. According to Adorno, a shudder is “the first aesthetic form.” A shudder marks the intrusion of the Other. A consciousness that does not know how to shudder is a reified consciousness. Such a consciousness lacks the ability to experience. Pain arises when “the essential otherness of Being reveals itself against what is familiar,” and experience “in its essence is this pain.” A life that rejects all pain is also a reified life. Only “that which is touched by the Other” makes life something alive. Without such a touch, we cannot escape the hell of the identical. Page of a book in korean. And only when a human being is capable of suffering is one truly present, and—whether consciously or unconsciously—capable of love. In this way, one’s eyes open to the structure of the world. When one has the capacity to suffer, a being goes beyond merely mechanical and spatial coexistence (Nebeneinander) and truly enacts authentic—meaning living—coexistence (Miteinander). Without suffering, we neither love nor live. Life is sacrificed for comfortable survival. Only relationships that are alive—true coexistence—can cause pain. In contrast, lifeless, functional coexistence does not cause pain, not even when it is destroyed. What distinguishes living coexistence from dead coexistence is pain. Pain is a bond. A person who rejects all painful states has no capacity to form bonds. Today, we avoid deep relationships that can bring pain. Everything happens within comfort zones where pain is excluded. In In Praise of Love, Alain Badiou quotes the slogan of a dating site: “Falling in love without pain is not difficult at all!” In such a world, the Other as pain disappears.
