Passage from Rough Magic by Miranda Newman: Mimicry has protected me when I've wandered into questionable circumstances. In 2019, I took a trip to the Bahamas to visit grandmother. Used to relying upon the resources of others, I found myself drawn onto a yacht occupied by John McAfee, founder of the virus protection software everyone used in the nineties, Internet troll, and alleged rapist and murderer who died in 2021. I entered the cabin-unsure if it was from an urge to find weed or to be close to wealth, notoriety, and hence opportunity-to find cigarette butts floating in glasses of red wine, puddles of dog piss from the four beasts McAfee kept aboard for protection, and smudges of white residue on a glass table. McAfee was hosting a live stream for one of his presidential runs. A big Bahamian man with a warm welcoming smile sat next to him cradling an AK-47. The British fellow who'd invited me onto the yacht donned a mask of McAfee's face and passed me a lit joint and my own McAfee mask. I took both and put on the mask. I didn't want to be McAfee, but I was keenly aware I was the only woman on the boat. I'd be safer if I could be mistaken for one of the guys, like a katydid confused with a leaf. I hit the joint. Surrounded by real and fake McAfees, my head spun from the strong weed. I passed the spliff to the large fellow with the gun. I stayed on the yacht until the joint was spent, doing my best to blend into the scratched and drooled-on leather sectional. McAfee started to tell a story about a Thai stripper he knew who could squeeze a water- melon out of her vagina. I slipped out to the deck to "get some air" and clambered onto the wooden pier, my pace accelerating with each step away from the boat.
