The ships on the Great Lakes have tucked into harbors waiting out the gales. Sending safe and warm thoughts to all of them, hope they can enjoy Thanksgiving.

I'm always shocked when I visit a friend's house and see almost nothing in the cupboards and fridge. I always have lots of food in the house. I can make a meal for 20 for a week or so.

I suspect their "grocery basket" has a lot of ultra-processed, so-called food. You couldn't buy actual food for that amount. I have the greatest sympathy for my daughter, my 14 yo grandson is 6'1', wears size 15 shoes, is growing like mad and eating like it. Her bills are tremendous.

I feel your pain on Tuesday. So far today I've baked a cake and two pies, split a turkey breast in two and have the back with goodies simmering, washed 5# of homegrown purple taters, and I still need to get the plates out. And yes, I've come down with a lovely cold just in time. How special.

For an old fashioned, no fail pie crust if you don't mind lard: 3 C flour, 1 cup lard, 1 teas salt. Mix with pastry blender. In a cup: 5 T H20, 1 teas cider vinegar, I egg, beat with fork. Mix together. It's called "Bride's piecrust". Won the Best Pie with it. Always tender even re-rolled.
