I try to capture the essence of the vibe but give it its own personality within it. Lead melodies are the deciding factor. You can’t copyright a chord progression. That’s why you can match thousands of songs with the same 4 chords but they all have different melodies.
With the example of your Owen Hart theme, how do you write an original piece so close to the inspiration, yet so different. How often do you find yourself getting a little too close to the original in the process?

I had the original Magnus when I was a kid and the white OP threw me off at first but I prefer that one

I don’t really have a personal preference. 99.9% of the time I write in the style that’s requested of me.
