Excerpt of an algorithmically delivered Facebook post from an account called “True Stories.” It reads: “David Hyde Pierce once stopped a Frasier table read by closing his script and saying, "Niles is not a punchline. If you reduce him to one, I am not playing him." Writers stared at him. NBC executives stared harder. He had just challenged the studio during the fourth season of their highest rated comedy. The conflict was simple. NBC wanted louder jokes. They wanted physical comedy. They wanted Niles to be clumsy, frantic, and broadly funny. Pierce believed the character worked because he carried quiet intelligence and emotional depth beneath the neurosis. The problem reached a boiling point when the network submitted notes asking for Niles to be rewritten as "more foolish" in several scenes. One note even suggested eliminating his slow burn affection for Daphne because it felt "too subtle." Pierce refused. He told producers that the entire series gained heart from that tension and that destroying it would flatten the show into routine sitcom noise. Executives warned him that he was overstepping. Pierce did not move. He told them that the audience responded to truth, not volume, and that Niles had to be played with dignity even when he was being ridiculous. The breakthrough came when Kelsey Grammer walked into the next meeting, read the notes, and backed Pierce completely. Grammer told the room that Frasier Crane needed Niles as an equal. not a clown. I understand this is a little “YOUR going to the camps liberal”/“(chuckles) You’re*”—but if this is gonna be a news story, the record should show the WSJ article did NOT say Cash was uncool (a ridiculous assessment). It said he could SEEM uncool compared to Dylan or Springsteen (also ridiculous)
