GDP is a measurement of money spent in an economy. It has no bearing on the actual quality of life or standard of living of its citizens. A person with no health insurance getting hit by a car is a great day for GDP. Taking a second job to pay for your gambling addition is great for the GDP.

This chart helped me figure it out (percentages are super-simplified FYI). If you convert, you give yourself a chance to win in regulation. If you fail, you can still make overtime (like you would if you kicked two FGs). Basically better because the goal is to win, not just go to overtime.
