Okinawa wasn't returned to Japan until the 1970s and it's the home of the largest US military base in Eat Asia. It wasn't land (lol) but the US seized control of the air space over Tokyo forcing Tokyo to build its major international airport in Chiba, outside of the US controlled airspace.
