I’m so honored to have two poems on the Long List this year for The Haiku Foundation’s Touchstone Individual Poems Award. I’m grateful to editors Vandana Parashar and Rowan Beckett for publishing these poems in #FemkuMag and to the panelists at THF for selecting my work for the Long List.

Smoke (not clouds!) billowing down the mountain. Helicopters are making water drops on the fire with water collected from a local pond.

I’m happy to have two poems out in #FemkuMag today, with thanks to editor Vandana Parashar. This spring issue comes out on International Women’s Day each year, and it is filled with the beautiful, powerful voices of women-identifying poets.

The deep snow that blanketed our mountain hollow for the past month has finally melted, and somehow, beneath all that cold, packed ice, the snowdrops were still making their way up through the dark earth, toward the coming sun. 🌱

For a while today, I know not how long, I gave myself over to despair and the still lingering dread from a sleepless night. But then I heard that Michael Longley had passed away from this world, and I pulled his book of poems down from the shelf, and the reading brought me home to myself.

I’ve been feeling lately that, if I am going to survive the horrors of the current moment with my spirit intact, I need to make more time for making beautiful things with my hands. This is the old maple tree that grows near my house. It has seen far more winters than I have and survived them all.

so the old year ends, and a new one begins … here’s hoping that the world we make together is a better one, despite all that looms on the horizon.

This poem appeared in issue no. 145 of hedgerow this year, edited by Caroline Skanne.

I’m happy to share that editor Michael Dylan Welch has made a video of all of the haiku that appeared in @pulsevoices.org this year. I was so pleased to be able to contribute a poem to Pulse. It’s lovely to see all of these moving haiku together in this video. pulsevoices.org/haiku/haiku-...

Let There Be Light at PVCC in Charlottesville has been and still remains one of my favorite nights of the year. It’s such a beautiful way to celebrate the upcoming solstice and the return of the light.

I voted this weekend: against right-wing fascism; for freedom, diversity, ethics, healthcare, safety, education, and human rights; for a world in which we choose to love and trust each other; for a world of beauty and creativity; for a world in which we care for this earth and all who inhabit it. 🌎☮️

Well, I’m giving this place a try as an alternative to the other place, though I expect that I will continue to be more active on Threads for now.

To kick things off, here’s a poem of mine that just won a Sakura Award in the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival’s Haiku Invitational.
