Thanks for the reminder to ask mom if she's ordering double babka or if I'm on my own this year.

I watched it so often as a kid that I could probably still quote large chunks of it. Don't remember much of the sequel, but I do periodically get the theme song stuck in my head.

Sidenote: As a queer person, the libraries-as-solution thing feels especially weird right now, given the increase in book bans and soft censorship.

Which some librarians actively and enthusiastically participate in, and many others enable. We are not all heroes.

Yuuuuup! I feel like people who love books are predisposed to trust both libraries as institutions and librarians as professionals way more than is probably wise.

I'm not saying there's no non-piracy solution here, I'm saying that the mere existence of libraries is not in itself a solution. You also have to 1) Fix the entire publishing industry, 2) Fund libraries and 3) Totally overhaul a lot of collection policies

"You can share a Bio 101 textbook with a couple dozen classmates, assuming everyone respects the borrowing period and it doesn't get misshelved or destroyed" is not an equitable solution for a student who can't afford to buy their textbooks.

Traditional textbooks are notoriously expensive (thank you, academic publishing). Many academic libraries do not buy them for a variety of reasons. Those that do buy them generally put pretty strict constraints on who can access them and for how long.

There are plenty of communities in the US that do not have libraries.

Libraries are chronically underfunded.

Many, many libraries are not responsive to the needs of their communities. Some are actively hostile to significant parts of their communities.

Maybe this will finally be incentive enough to get rid of some books to make room for ones (it will not).

This entire thread feels like a personal attack.

The weird thing is I am generally firmly on team cake. Savory pie is *amazing* but sweet pie I can take or leave.

The only thing that stresses Daltrey out about the holidays is that my partner and I spend a few hours at my parents, so there are fewer skritches and I come home smelling like other cats.
November 26, 2025 at 7:24 PM
And by "it" I mean telling her.
November 24, 2025 at 8:11 PM
I love that! It's possible, but I'm not risking it. 😂
November 24, 2025 at 8:10 PM
Precisely
November 24, 2025 at 8:05 PM
Same. I'll probably get a mom-related tattoo after she dies, and she'd hate the idea of that enough all by itself.
November 24, 2025 at 8:01 PM
😂 That was also my thought process when I learned about it, but cat not cockatiel.

I hate professional conferences, and the one time I attended one there I got through it by bribing myself with quick forays into the market between sessions.
November 24, 2025 at 4:41 PM
Damn, beat me to it.
November 23, 2025 at 7:25 PM
Yes, I'm telling myself I'm okay with it because it's the Broadway version and not the movie version. But I'm probably just okay with it because I love them so much. 😂

"Well, we've navigated relatively unscathed through the first half of the ice dance free dance event," he says wearily. 😂
