I worked in a mall for 10 years. Without fail, every Thanksgiving or other holiday started with me opening the door for a customer with their face pressed against the glass who would ask me that question. I only had one self-aware customer who answered her question with the answer that she was why.
Shout-out to everyone in the US who will have to deal with "It's a holiday, why are you working?" quips from the very customers who are the reasons you're working today. I see you, I love you, and I'm proud of you for not punching anyone over it.
