I already accept this, and believe a much shorter work week should be standard, along with various other people-led practices and policies.

But wasn't this a significant reduction in hours of the standards at the time? Where 10 to 12 hour days, 6 or 7 days a week were the norm.
I believe he raised wages and cut-back hours to improve worker morale and productivity.
