He/him.
My pleasure. And thanks for reading Ryan's book. I think it is somewhat of a neglected masterpiece.

Got someone on your gift list who already has loads of books?

They probably don't have these ones...
The Best Books You've Never Read
A selection of books that I think are wonderful but no one, or hardly anyone, I know has read them too. If you have then maybe we should be friends?

Did it work?

It can only be used once, so it's very much a first come, first served kind of thing.

I can't pretend to have particularly fallen for any of his other plays, to be honest, but that one was a bit special.

I have yet to read it, but it is on my to-be-read list.

Many years later I researched and wrote the Mastermind questions on The Plays of Tom Stoppard for the 2025 grand final, which was certainly one way to get to know his work better.
Mastermind - 2024/25: 31. The Final
Clive Myrie asks the questions in the grand final. The specialist subjects include the stage plays of Sir Tom Stoppard, the music of Led Zeppelin, penguins, and the Empire State Building.

Here's a list of books that would make great gifts for any Japanophiles in your life, and it mainly avoids the usual suspects.
Books for Japanophiles
UK bookshops are full of Japanese literature, particularly fiction, in translation these days, and that is a wonderful thing to see.

Indeed.

I shall do, of course.

It's basically some Westminster Council by-law. If you sit at a table in the bar at any time, you have to order food.

You don't have to have grub if you sit at the counter before a certain time in the afternoon. Can't remember what time that is. And after that, you too have to order food.

You are most kind, thank you very much!

The sense of achievement in having finished reading a book, often in a relatively short space of time, can also help less confident readers.
