Some late night baking has been going on.

These are chocolate chip and marzipan shortbreads.
A photograph of some shortbread that has just come out of the oven. There are two stainless steel trays with baking parchment on them. One contains eight roughly square shortbreads and you can see dots of white and milk chocolate chips, and some darker brown areas which is marzipan. Below that is a second tray which has six square and one round shortbread, which is the one I made with the last bit of the dough. These are sitting on a stainless steel kitchen island and you can see a bit of a rolling pin, a glass of water and salt pot in the background.

New arrivals.

My birthday present to myself was the Blaster Curtis from We Are Rewind. It is, I must admit, somewhat larger than I imagined.

Currently playing Sandhills Music by Ben Seretan. On cassette, obviously.
This is a photograph of a beat box, basically. It's a new machine made by the company We Are Rewind. It's mainly black with silver trim. Two large round speakers are on either side of the front with smaller round speakers just above them. There are two VU dials with needles that are lit up in the centre of the top of the front beneath them is the We Are Rewind logo and the actual cassette deck. Various buttons for controlling it are underneath. It is sitting on a mantelpiece, which at the moment is the only place I can find for it. There is a painted green wall behind. The mantelpiece is white. Also on the mantelpiece is a dried leaf and a small ceramic pot, and you can see a few leaves and shadows of leaves on the right-hand side.

I've used it for hotel bookings, travel insurance, my last pair of Allbirds, Who Gives A Crap orders, and all manner of things. They've paid back more than £500 since I joined.

There's no catch. They have an annual fee, but they only take that out of your positive balance. So there's no outlay.

The high point for me was during the interval when I was making my way back from the loo, and a woman admired my t-shirt. It was this Katie Malco shirt.

I thanked her and suggested she check out Katie's music.
This is a photo of a t-shirt on a flat surface rather than being worn by someone. It is a dark moss green colour and features a hand-drawn illustration of a cottage, perhaps an end terrace. You can see it from about halfway up, so you get half of the door and a downstairs window. And one upstairs window from which a yellow light is emitting. You can also see the roof and chimney, and next to the house is a tree without leaves. There's a hint that there might be some snow. It's definitely an autumn or winter scene. Katie Malco's signature is underneath because it's a drawing by her.

I first saw him in Nikita, probably still my favourite performance of his. Always an engaging actor.

Delighted to see @tinamakereti.bsky.social's new novel, The Mires, at my local library this morning.
This is a photograph of a display at my local library. It's a stand that sits about waist height. It has a banner above it saying "New Books" with a Halloween-themed design. The books themselves are not a horror or Halloween selection. In the bottom left-hand corner is a copy of Tina's novel "The Mires". There are about a dozen other books, including "The Shop Girl of Ironbridge", "The Outcast Mage", and "Ragwort". In the background, you can see a couple of library posters and displays.

And there is also this little gem, a signed and numbered limited edition of Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro.

But it ain't cheap.
A hardback limited edition copy of Kazuo Ishiguro's novel Never Let Me Go. It is a yellow cover with a grey box about a third of the way down, with the author name and book title, and the date of March 2005 underneath. This is a copy of Jerome's Study, a hand-built book by Max Porter and Catrin Morgan. It's effectively a brochure of sorts, made of folded card with an elastic binding. The cover is a geometric line drawing that resembles folded paper. This is another picture of Jerome's Study, this time folded out concertina style so that you can see some of the content. It shows some geometric drawings and a photograph of an old caravan. This is a photograph of the cover of a book called "The House of Fiction," an anthology of the short story edited by Caroline Gordon and Allen Tate. The cover has an orange, brown and black geometric pattern on the front and a list of the authors included which include Gustav Flaubert, Edgar Allan Poe, Henry James, James Joyce, Catherine Ann Porter and Ernest Hemingway. Photograph of six copies of the 1970s educational magazine for children "Look and Learn". They are displayed in two rows of three magazines. The headlines include "Elephants Were His Allies", "The Great Trek", and "Warriors of the World".

The other week I flew to Copenhagen to see Francis of Delirium support Blondshell.

(They were not supporting on the UK dates so I thought, fuck it, go to Denmark, see one my fave bands and eat lots of pastries.)

Anyway, they were great. Would do again.

This is a screenshot of a poem. The poem reads as follows: The Day After National Poetry Day The haiku are hungover, but last night was a laugh. The sonnets, they got shitfaced and woke up in the bath. The sestinas drank retsina, in volumes ill-advised. The tanka got some tattoos that can never be revised. The villanelles are not so swell, but why, they can't recall. The limericks were violently sick halfway up the wall. The cinquains? Doubled up in pain after smoking dodgy gear. Thank goodness National Poetry Day is only once a year.

Also, curious as to whether or not the guy with the pop-up t-shirt stand in the hight street managed to sell the design he had decided to make the most prominent on the display.

Here's how it turned out. Please forgive the chunk that's missing. It fell off while I was cutting it and I shoved it straight into my face.

The verdict is: very moist (apologies to people who don't like that word) and, unsurprisingly, quite orangey in flavour.

Would certainly make it again.
It's a picture of a slice of cake on a plate. The cake is a triangular wedge, cut from a round cake. The crust is very dark brown, the inside a light beige. You can just about see little strands of what I assume is Satsuma zest inside. The cake is covered in flaked almonds. The plate is an old 1950s design with various geometric patterns on it, plus drawings of knives, spoons, and forks. There is a big fat mug in the background which is containing my tea, and you can just make out some bookcases and chairs in the far background, but they are blurred.

Satsuma cake update.

Did not have the right size of square tin so did a round one.

Looks OK. Won't be able to try any till tomorrow.

More news as I have it.
This is a circular cake, which has been baked to a pretty nice golden brown colour with flaked almonds on top. It is sitting on a wire rack to cool, and you can see kitchen cupboards and a stove top in the background.

I can report that I did indeed attempt the muffins, and they turned out really rather nice.
A photo of my kitchen counter during the making of red bean paste muffins. The main focus of the picture is a metal muffin tray in which there are 12 muffin cases. Three lines of four, and you can see dollops of muffin mixture with a spoonful of red bean paste in each. The bottom left-hand two muffin cases also have muffin mixture on top of the red bean paste. So you're joining me mid-process. The background of the picture is a mixing bowl and some spoons and other items, most of which are covered in muffin mixture. Here we have the muffin tray taken from a slightly different angle. It's now moved to the counter next to the oven. All of the muffins now have the mixture added on top, so you can't see any red bean paste. And some black sesame seeds have been added to the top of the mixture. In the background you can see some gas hobs and a flour jar. Here we have the muffin tray out of the oven. All of the muffins are now risen - not overly high but risen nonetheless - and are a nice golden brown. The sesame seeds have spread across the top, and they're all pretty much the same size and shape except for the one in the top left-hand corner which is a bit bigger and was, I can assure you, the one I ate first. This picture was taken a little later, once muffins had cooled down. It is a photograph of one of the muffins on a plate next to a cup of buckwheat tea (I wanted to continue the Japanese theme). I have chopped the muffin in half so you're looking at two cross-sections. You can see the red bean paste sitting inside the muffin is sitting on a plate that has a picture of a fish on it.

I don't actually have a copy of the finished book. Maybe Faber should have sent me one? I don't know what the etiquette is. But I checked it out in my local bookshop. Of course, just to see if I was mentioned in the acknowledgements, and indeed I am.
