My favorite character of the year
Tânia Maria has been catapulted to fame for her 11-minute role in Brazil’s four Oscar-nominated movie “The Secret Agent.” The 79-year-old newcomer has drawn praise from international film critics, and amassed more than 100,000 social media followers in just months.
Tânia Maria Is Brazil’s Newest Film Icon
Clad in florals and puffing on a cigarette, Tânia Maria has captivated audiences with a striking, if brief, performance in “The Secret Agent,” Brazil’s latest Oscar nominee.

Wise words from WEB DuBois to gird us today: "It would be shame and cowardice to surrender this glorious land and its opportunities for civilization and humanity to the thugs and lynchers, the mobs and profiteers, the monopolists & gamblers who today choke its soul and steal its resources."

Using "performative" as an insult in *politics* is hilarious.
NEW: Kristi Noem is facing by far the most credible impeachment effort of Trump's 2nd term. Some House Dems are fuming.

"Noem is just soup du jour," one told @axios.com. "It's all performative bullsh*t."

Centrists say they want to focus on affordability. www.axios.com/2026/01/14/k...

"There's a frustration with all these impeachments," said one House Democrat. "Noem is just soup du jour."

I think I'm the only one on BlueSky watching Hornets vs. Pacers so I'm the only one who saw the Pacers hit a shot to take the lead with 10 seconds left and then steal the inbound. Incredible scenes

People rightly give NYT a ton of shit but good on them for forcing him to watch the video and getting his first impression on the record.

Ever since our forefathers came on this land
We've been coddling those we should be running through
Please don't wait around for them to come and shake hands
They're not going to be waiting for you

My general rule is that I want to live in an affordable big city, but with *a lot* of exceptions based on places I've actually been to or lived.

This is the moment we branded up the new Discovery Building. It's our new science and operations building at Rothera Research Station, Antarctica.

Discovery replaces several buildings which faithfully stood against elements during the 50 years of Rothera's history.

Yes, the city needs to actually repave streets. Yes, the city needs to repair sidewalks. Yes, the city needs to install curb ramps.

But the bigger problem is that when LA decides to do anything at all to "help" pedestrians, the result looks like this complete and utter bullshit

Everyone's dunking on Matt but I think if you look at actual polling of Hispanic voters this is not a crazy portrait. The one thing I'd quibble with is I don't think there's evidence that ICE abuses are moving the needle with Hispanic voters.
i uh. do not think this is how the swing Hispanic voter thinks

I'm not confident this will actually affect the quality of junior-associate work but I am confident that this is awful for law student quality of life.
Duuuuuuuuumb

Sorry for not offering better analysis
In a first, many top law firms this year are recruiting summer associates during students' first semester. Some are dangling ‘jumbo offers’ and ‘loyalty’ bonuses for students who do two summer stints back-to-back, keeping them out of other firms' reach reut.rs/44U44cD

CalTech research lab in Pasadena's university district indefinitely delayed because it borders a church. I find this incredibly depressing. No will at any level of government to retain our scientific leadership.
