one of my favorite little bits of trivia is that the snes shadowrun game was localized to jp by data east(?!?) and they just left the english in and put subtitles on screen for everything

there's actually a (japanese language) wiki for en->jp fan translations if you're interested

The problem with passion projects is sometimes the passion goes its own way but you still want to finish them.

So right now my struggle is taking what I've made and re-evaluating what today me wants out of it.

Been very very happy with art progress though, fixing a lot of long-standing headaches I've had with my work and I'm excited to show more when the fog lifts somewhat.

I legitimately feel like the most popular games of the past ten years have all been in some way difficult to figure out without resorting to asking people or third party resources.

And I don't think that's coincidence.

I think on some level it's easy to kinda just forget that humans are humans, and trying to shave off all the rough edges to create a nice clean experience for them only takes away from that humanizing aspect of them.

another way to phrase this is that a programmer who is primarily concerned with producing as much code as possible is bad at programming.

Winning all the time doesn't feel great. If I feel like I'm just going through the motions, then the characters are the ones having fun, not me.

For it to be a game, I have to feel like it enriches me, the weak, fragile player, in some way, not the one doing the cool stuff.
