Lily led them inside one of the barns, the largest one. It was about fifty feet across and over a hundred feet long. In its centre were several chains that ran through loops in the floor and off to either side into heavy circular winches. Hanging on the walls were various sizes of reinforced metal collars, cuffs, muzzles and poles with nasty looking hooks. Beryl knew there had to be something like this here, but it was something else to actually see it. “This is where they do it, isn't it?” Scavengers, or most of them at least, had some pride. They were hunters – they respected their prey, and they earned their prizes. Beryl remembered that great dragon. Imagined him muzzled and held down in this dingy barn, while the people who were meant to be protecting him pierced his body and stole his life blood.

A Sword of Gold and Ruin, by @annasmithspark.bsky.social the sequel to one of my favourite fantasy books ever at this point. I can’t wait to read more of this Celtic fantasy which is bursting with its deep mythology.

I'll bring them over.” “If we can take those to a friendly constable, maybe we can argue Sol’s case a bit. Press them for some more info…” Beryl scoffed “A friendly constable? I don’t think they exist, and I hunt unicorns for a living…” Heidi looked over at Mina. “Well, I can think of a constable who is friendly towards one of us…” Mina realised who she meant and was immediately tempted to bury her face in the pile of greasy chips. “Please,” she groaned, “anyone but him…” “Unless you have any better ideas…” Mina sighed. “I’ll send him a note, but if golden boy asks me out to dinner, I’ll disintegrate myself where I stand.”

Mr Bergamot was perched on a stool by the counter. He was exactly what you would expect to see if you walked into a magic shop: a man in his mid-fifties, with a well-trimmed goatee and a friendly twinkle in his eyes. He clasped his hands to his heart in relief. “Thank you so much, my dear! Please forgive me for making you do that. If Gabriel or I had tried, we might not have been done by midday tomorrow. You’ve saved us a whole day’s business.” That was an exaggeration, if she had done it, so could any-one else. Instead Bergamot had stayed at the counter, hoping to sell a big-ticket item that would make up for lack of potions sales that day.
