I hear you the pain threshold greatly spoiled Alien Romulus for me. It is the wild west out there. Always bring hearing protection or a quick dive into the toilet and McGiver a loo roll into my lobes.

I’ve become a little off-put by how loud cinema’s are especially in half empty rooms without absorbing bodies. Glad you had a great time! NIN Cinema experience does sound tempting!

I want to check out the new 990’s Pro X. Have a look at What Hi-Fi for reviews - I realise it is a bit of a “huh” to review audio — so much of it is brain processing — but I tend to trust their reviews based on overlap with my own gear. Ideally, a listen?

Thanks Joe - the reviews are funny in a maniacal way, so that was a good chuckle.

Should probably have written more directly - In reacting I wanted to express something for those reading along whom have such a background. If you found your way into this industry through that path, it doesn’t in any way invalidate it. Not that that was ever implied from reading the post of course.

All the comments here … I think they all come from a place of wanting to help right?

Sometimes we can argue for and offer roles and sometimes help manifests itself in being something of a guiding light. Thank you for doing so.

I think I understand what you are saying, though being honest; Using terms like “problems” and “prioritised” could convey this being intentional on our part and risks invalidating good efforts and also the experiences of starters alike?

Perhaps it is possible to adress this in less absolute terms?

Are you writing that there is a “problem” that fresh talent is never given a chance to enter the industry via (any) nurturing route?

Not yet come across those adds and don’t disagree. I wanted to express the nuance (rather than being contrarian) on free work. A little unnecessary perhaps, as the original post did the same already, with a good example of meaningful free work.

Ultimately we are forming human relationships in all these situations and the warning that some will further their own career on the backs of other people’s good will is loud and clear. There are fortunately many other (better) scenarios too. Good luck everyone!

If done for “career advancement” it could be disappointing and even demotivating - either go into it with ears wide open and absorb what you can, or if it is for networking career growth, indeed take the other advice and form a group with other volunteers.

… in the prescribed nature of working for someone with a vision (even if disagreeable).

Such work “could” be an accelerant to growth, but as said, there has to be a purely intrinsic motivation and as you pointed out, could easily be entirely a one directional relationship.

A largely agreeing thought. Agreed on “free” lacking value. Free doesn’t have value and almost never translates to it.

However, when done for gaining experience, and mentally separated from “networking”, “advancing career” and “posting about it” there could be value …

With a NIN shirt too - talk about nailing the quake heritage there! Have fun, you are going to be incredible in that role.
