My parents were over today to celebrate my birthday, and being that it was my 40th, I figured a prime rib would not be out of order. Fortunately the butcher opened in time this weekend for me to get one.

Snowed in, got a fire going, and starting on @alissawilkinson.bsky.social’s WE TELL OURSELVES STORIES and this is kind of a hell of a start for today.

I’m starting to think my dog may actually be a muppet in disguise.

Today became Barnes and Noble rewards cash in day. Every year I save them up then use January being my birthday as pretext to go crazy. Knew what I wanted, but had to go to Georgetown to get all of them in one spot (or some at all).

The setting of Thomas Hardy’s “The Darkling Thrush” for King’s College’s Festival of Lessons & Carols tonight was really lovely.

What perfect album came out the year you turned 16?

I pretty much only like whole albums not individual songs on Spotify, and this is the only album I have listed from that year.

Even googling lists of best albums from 2002…there’s not much. Maybe that’s why I listened a lot to the 80’s station.

One other thought, on this in particular:

I have terrible news for the author.

I’d be stuck halfway through this mushroom trip of a story, wondering like our protagonist if there was any point to this book. (It’s got a book club at work or else I’d have given up on it.)

Jamie got me this for Christmas a couple years back - it’s photographs Wenders made while scouting for PARIS, TEXAS. It has some interviews too, but those are in German.

Question: which word did he emphasize?

Putin?
Not?
Planning?
Invade?
All?
or
Europe?

Options abound.
