Gillen played for a reorganized Keystone Club on September 10 in an exhibition against the Phillies. Two days later he gets a trial with the Phillies on September 12 in an exhibition against Trenton. This goes well enough that makes the Phillies' subsequent road trip. @justmckinney.bsky.social

A discovery. The Phillies evidently had 14 catchers in 1884. Tom Gillen filled in at catcher on September 19, 1884 for the Phillies in Buffalo. The except from the September 15, 1884 Wilmington News Journal confirms it is him.

The August 27, 1884 Sporting Life included this small note about the Phillies' lease for Recreation Park. It notes that the club has spent three seasons there, inferring that the club's existence started in 1882, not 1883 as is commonly thought today.

FOUNDED WHEN?

The Phillies promote that they were established in 1883 since it was their first season in the National League. It was not their first season, however. The club was organized in early 1882 and played a season in the League Alliance.

Ed's last address was at 1240 Palmer St., which was familiar. Why? Because Reach's factory was at Tulip and Palmer Streets. They are within walking distance.

I decided to dive into Ed Sixsmith a little. In the 1900 Census, he was listed as a BASEBALL STITCHER! Now, how cool was that. Did he work at Reach's factory on Tulip St?!

Finally, I was able to use Gene Vadeboncouer, an 1884 Phillies catcher.

@justmckinney.bsky.social know anything about him?

Played baseball in Cape May today. The trek is 2 hours each way and I caught up on some @twostrikenoise.bsky.social episodes. Regarding the Jim Thome "Thome-Nator" nickname, some Phillies fans used it in 2003.
