Some behind-the-scenes details: Steve Englehart had idea about where he wanted the F.F. to go, while EIC Tom DeFalco wants the team returned to their Silver Age glory. So instead we get major retcons like this, only done as a dream sequence with no bearing on reality. #marvel #ff

[Fantastic Four #332, Nov. 1989] It’s yet another Fantastic Four issue that’s entirely a dream sequence, as Steve Englehart and Tom DeFalco continue to drive this comic into the ground. I hope that the creative time rights the ship soon, because this is painful. [#cmro M7673]

The theme of this week’s logo is “returning villains”, and most of them have the exact same pose: the re-equipped (and needlessly angry) Scorpion; the Chameleon posing as J. Jonah Jameson; Blacklash, for some reason; and the armored Rhino! #marvel #cmro #mda

Strangely, the two villains don’t end up recapturing the hostage, but instead they’re after the Scorpion’s tail for some reason. And then the issue just…ends. It feels like they had more plot but just ran out of pages. #marvel #spiderman

Spider-Man is basically out of the picture, as the supervillains sent by Justin Hammer do battle with the Scorpion. His new tail is pretty good at fighting them off, but not quite good enough. #marvel #spiderman

The superhero battles are almost an afterthought in these issues: In the last few pages of the book, Spider-Man rescues the hostage and faces off against Scorpion, when they’re both suddenly interrupted by the Rhino and Blacklash! #marvel #spiderman
December 13, 2025 at 7:34 PM
Another side plot to add to the list: Mary Jane keeps losing modeling jobs at the last minute, and it’s all because of Jonathan Caesar, the millionaire who’s in prison for kidnapping her! Put a pin in this as a future storyline that may or may not pay off. #marvel #spiderman
December 13, 2025 at 7:32 PM
The death threat against J. Jonah Jameson ends very anticlimactically: Jameson does not agree to show up (he’s actually the Chameleon in disguise), so Scorpion decides not to kill his hostage and kidnaps him instead. You know, like he originally planned. #marvel #spiderman

I have a serious question: I get that “I said no anchovies!” is a common joke, but were anchovies really a common topping on most pizzas? Why would you have to tell them NOT to put anchovies on your pizza? Don’t you just order the pizza you want?! #marvel #spiderman
December 13, 2025 at 7:23 PM
Pizza time! Spider-Man is delivering pizza to Scorpion, which is clearly a callback to the iconic pizza-delivery scene in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 [#mcuo C617]! #marvel #spiderman #pizzatime

[Amazing Spider-Man #319, Sep. 1989] This Party City version of the Sinister Six is missing half of its members! And is this the first iteration of the Rhino where he’s wearing some sort of mechanical armor?? [#cmro M7662]

Scorpion calls an audible, and the kidnapping turns into a hostage situation: If J. Jonah Jameson doesn’t turn himself over to be killed, then the general dies instead. It doesn’t seem like much of a bargaining chip when you admit you’re going to kill JJJ.… #marvel #spiderman

Scorpion’s tail is stylistically exaggerated just like Spider-Man’s webs are. Sometimes the stylization works, but other times it just seems like too much. #marvel #spiderman
December 13, 2025 at 5:18 AM
Scorpion arrives to kidnap General Musgrave, and man that new tail seems really long! Also, the playful banter seems off in this issue. “Hey, Scorpion! Imagine this!” #marvel #spiderman
December 13, 2025 at 5:16 AM
Oh yeah, there’s an actual battle between Spider-Man and Scorpion in the middle of all the drama and setups for future stories! Peter is going to take pictures of a medal ceremony, and the Scorpion is there to cause some damage! #marvel #spiderman
December 13, 2025 at 5:13 AM
I’m also not a fan of these vertical panel layouts for no apparent reason, and then you end up with Peter’s face wedged in with his eye way too close together. (I’m definitely complaining a lot about Spider-Man lately. Maybe the comic is in a slump?) #marvel #spiderman
December 13, 2025 at 5:11 AM
I’m starting to dislike how often these Spider-Man comics take multiple detours clearly intended to set up future storylines. Can’t you just tell one coherent story and weave these in more naturally? Or just tell the Harry Osborn story later. #marvel #spiderman
December 13, 2025 at 5:08 AM
I’m kind of on Peter’s side with this one: If you’re stressed about money and a job falls through, you don’t go out dancing with friends without telling your partner. Especially when you’re married. #marvel #spiderman
December 13, 2025 at 5:06 AM
I guess the twist of J. Jonah Jameson being replaced by the Chameleon was revealed in other Spider-Man comics? That’s a drawback of having separate comics covering the same characters: If you only follow one title, sometimes the story gets shortchanged. #marvel #spiderman

Mac Gargan has been outfitted with an upgraded Scorpion suit by Justin Hammer, and he plans to use it for revenge on J. Jonah Jameson! Too bad that J.J.J. is currently being replaced by the Chameleon…! #marvel #spiderman

[Amazing Spider-Man #318, Aug. 1989] Todd McFarlane takes a shot at redesigning the Scorpion, and the Scorpion takes a shot at Spider-Man! [#cmro M7661]

This week’s logo covers the Vision Quest storyline from West Coast Avengers #42–45, where the Vision is kidnapped, disassembled, erased, and eventually restored as a shadow of his former self. #marvel #cmro #mda
December 13, 2025 at 4:58 AM
U.S. Agent is weirdly bothered by Vision’s lack of clothing, so Vision agrees to fashion a new costume for himself. There are other twists at the end of the issue, but honestly I’m already tired of rehashing Vision’s origins. Let’s wrap up Vision Quest! #marvel #westcoastavengers
December 13, 2025 at 4:57 AM
Wanda asks Simon Williams to once again provide access to his brain patterns, so that Vision can theoretically be restored to his previous state. Simon refuses, and Wanda drops a cliff face on him. #marvel #westcoastavengers
December 13, 2025 at 4:55 AM
The Vision no longer has the emotions he previously experienced, so his relationship with Wanda is essentially nonexistent. Besides all of the experiences which are gone, he is also missing the brain patterns from Simon Williams which he had before. #marvel #westcoastavengers
