When I was up there in June I spent a wonderful half hour or so sitting in front of the Jewel and talking to a museum volunteer about all things Middleham, Richard III, Bosworth (I live near the battlefield) and Leicester. Brilliant 🥰

I have 3 pictures of it on display, in different rooms of my house!

No prizes for guessing which one I’ll be going for.
In case I hadn’t mentioned it before (😂) I love, love, love The Middleham Jewel 😍, always one of my ‘must see’ when in York.

Her childhood home was in a village just a couple of miles from where I live now. A statue is planned for outside the College in the nearby town.

We were up that way in October, NC500 was signposted everywhere. My cousin did the run last year, my dad did over half of that route in the 1950’s - a very different motoring experience!
We were not doing the run but did go up to Ullapool, my first visit there and we loved it.

I will have to arrange my next visit more carefully! Although this time I did visit inside Fairfax House and Treasurers House, both first time visits. Spent many a day inside Grays Court as a student but had never been in the other half before.

Have you been inside the Hall? One I haven’t seen yet although walked by many times. Last time I was in York their open day had been the day before I arrived!

10. Red Cross documents show that a search of Prisoner of War records did not find any information about Uncle Arthur. He is listed at Louverval.
In cemeteries at Metz & Gouzeaucourt there are unknown soldiers from his Battalion who died the same day. Could one be him?

9. As darkness fell the battle died down. Overnight was quiet and the Guards dug in to consolidate their positions.
Casualty reports came in during the night and showed that 235
Other Ranks of the Btn were killed, wounded or missing.
Great Uncle Arthur was listed as missing. He was never found.

1.30pm Gouzeaucourt now in the hands of the 1st Guards Brigade.
2.45pm A cavalry unit came into action on the right hand side hoping to turn the enemy's left but came under heavy fire.
3.30pm Eleven tanks came up on the right and also became targets for German artillery.

7. Going down the slope towards the village the men came under intense fire but the advance continued, now faster, down the hill and up the slopes into the village. The left of the Btn came to the crossroads in the village and the full Btn attacked towards Quentin Ridge under heavy barrage.

6. As they reached the crest they came under heavy machine gun fire from Germans on higher ground in the village. They continued to advance in rushes, slowing only to cut through 3 belts of barbed wire. Greatest difficulty was for those out to the right (Uncle Arthur's position).

5. The Battalion halted in a clearing in the woods just to the south of the road to prepare Lewis Guns. No 4 Company (I believe Uncle Arthur) were on the extreme right, with a frontage of 200 yards.
12.30pm The attack commenced with the Brigade spread out across the landscape advancing in 4 waves.
