It's probably the fur, but this lamellar armor just looks way more intimidating than standard plate.

Norwegian peasant militia axes were weird. But the curved head was so you get the leverage of an axe, but a similar drawing/cutting motion you get with a curved sword. It's one of those designs that didn't really make it.
