steller’s sea cow (Hydrodamalis giganteus)

I recently read Beasts of the Sea by Iida Turpeinen that recounts in dramatic fashion the voyage of Steller, the discovery, subsequent extinction, and the discovery of the skeleton of one and how it ended up In Helsinki. A wonderful book you should read.

Let's hear it for ancient mammals!
In the foreground is the North American extinct giraffe-like camel Aepycamelis. It is running away from a dark, looming storm with lightning. A bear-sized ancient beaver Castoroides is sitting in a shallow pond eating aquatic weeds with ducks in the background. Even though I did kinda jump on the badwagon back when the frozen Homotherium cub was published, I decided to focus on the adult interpretation, though I knew eventually I would like to do something featuring cubs. And here it is! A nice family portrait.

Just learned the absolutely insane news that a cub of what is likely a Homotherium latidens was found and just described. Couldnt help but make a quick study of it. Too busy to take it any further now but i’m sure i’ll return to it as soon as I’m able

OK, decided to tweak it a little because me trying to parallel the animal with the figurine displayed horizontally obscured the fact that it had high shoulders and not a flat back 🙃

I really enjoy doing series with fixed landscapes showing the passage of time and native fauna. I previously shared one I've made with different times of the day in Pleistocene Central Brazil, and here is an earlier one I did showing the four seasons in Ice Age Beringia (America-Asia land bridge).
In Spring, it's morning and a mother short-faced bear walks by a field in bloom while her cub stands up and looks off-screen curiously. There are two trees with lush green leaves to the left, and hazy mountains in the background. A flock of ducks or geese flies in formation in the sky. In Summer, it's noon and a herd of wild horses grazes in the field. The trees are green, the mountains are lush with greenery, and the sky is blue. In autumn, the sun is starting to set and a lone Homotherium lets out a call, with visible condensation coming out of his mouth. The field is drab, the trees have yellow leaves and the mountains in the background show a brown landscape. In winter, the sky is overcast and it is snowing. A herd of mammoths crosses the snow-covered field, while a white hare moves out of the way. The trees are leafless and the mountains are also covered in snow.

Ice Age horses

A herd of wild horses gallops across a grassland. Towards the top of the scene, the horses' appearance becomes more reminiscent of the cave paintings from the Lascaux cave and the grass begins to fade away.
