Ever wise, Prof Snyder reminds us that #WeAreNotHelpless in face of Russian genocide 👍👏👇

"Fortunately, there is something that we as individuals can do... I hope that many of you will do so, thinking of this fifth winter of the war, and of the people who have no choice but to fight and to endure."

"Even though the Ukrainian need is great and Europeans are paying for everything, 🇺🇸 has been slow to make deliveries.

We are not sending the Ukrainians the air defence they need to protect themselves. This is one reason millions of people are in the cold, and why civilians die almost every day."

Right now in 🇺🇦 cities, people freeze to death in apartment blocks. Elderly & disabled Ukrainians who can't reach food sources without lifts starve on upper floors because Ukrainian volunteers, working 24/7, can't reach them all. While 🇷🇺 bombs the energy grid, 🇺🇸 starves 🇺🇦 of air defences. Genocide.

We don't have to helplessly watch 🇷🇺 genocide. See @timothysnyder.bsky.social suggestions on how to help - I've added links below. These organisations do brilliant work on the ground - not least in air defence - which is why we donate. #WeAreNotHelpless 👇

I’m not Ukrainian. I have no family or personal link to Ukraine.

But I believe in the just and fair defence of a nation standing on the frontlines of a genocidal, unprovoked attack.

Let me explain why the bravery of Ukrainians changed me forever.

Long thread 🧵....

When russia attacked, Ukraine was unprepared.

Many didn’t believe it would really happen — that a full-scale invasion could start without any provocation.

But when it did, ordinary people stood up to fight.

These weren’t professional soldiers.
They were bakers, dog walkers, office workers, IT specialists, artists, actors — people like you and me.

They defended their homes, their families, their land.

The first days were chaos and heartbreak. Families torn apart. Towns bombed.

And yet, Ukrainians fought back with whatever they had — tractors, hobby drones, hunting rifles, even Molotov cocktails made by grandmas.

Some welded metal “hedgehogs” to block tanks. Others collected bottles for more defensive tools.

One young boy used his drone to spot a Russian tank column and warn the army in time.

The courage was unreal. They fought for their lives.

Ukraine was a peaceful country forced into survival mode.

From that desperation came innovation — people began building drones in garages. What started small became a nationwide grassroots defence effort.

Make no mistake: this war is not glorious. Ukraine has lost so much.

This isn’t the first time russia has tried to crush them, either.
They were promised security by the West, China, and russia itself — but when the invasion came, they stood alone.

Now, Ukrainians pay in blood every day for their freedom.

They fight not because they want to — but because they have to.
They know what it means to live under russian oppression, and they refuse to go back.

Two other stories. The Ukrainians are so worried that the US and Russia are carving up Ukraine behind their back, that they begged European states to join the talks. And, finally, Trump told a bald-faced lie about India stopping all purchases of Russian oil, and it was shamefully reported.
