The whole notion of Divorce is predicated on living separate and apart. Some cohabit miserably until the Court date but by the end of the process many have had to sell and are renting. Some cannot get home loans as banks will not release the original joint mortgage

The article doesn’t mention this, but marriage breakdown can also lead to later life renting. Some separated couples feel forced to live under the same roof, but that is not always possible eg where domestic abuse is involved
