The leading theory is they're trying to scare people off the site, stop them writing, and somehow weaken the archive because they don't like that it hosts works of all kinds.

I do think there is still a market for this kind of device, and there are good ones out there. I’ve got a Walkman (I am amused they’re still using this name) and love it.
