It actually feels like fall, and I’m trying to re-emerge. We’ll call this my therapist-prescribed rest day of sacred creativity - maple spice latte, vegan carrot cake, writing and a good library book (“Moving Mountains: Writing Nature through Illness and Disability”)

In memory, Shane Patrick MacGowan, former member of the punk band Nipple Erectors, co-founder and lead singer of the Celtic punk band The Pogues, founder of Shane MacGowan and The Popes, died of pneumonia after a long illness.

The tattoo on my wrist reads 29/11/14, and here I am, a decade later, writing poetry at the bar, hot toddy in hand, previously a rusty nail or two, while the original 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre plays in the background, without subtitles.

I wrote about people insulting Elon Musk and his relationship with Trump by calling him ‘Elonia’ or ‘First Lady.’

This approach doesn’t work both because it reinforces the language and approach of bigotry, and because it doesn’t hurt our powerful targets one bit.

One year ago I started my Substack. It’s been a lovely space for my musings without the anxiety of a deadline. I’m inconsistent with it, but that’s part of the calmness.

And also, the owners of the gentrified monstrosity next door are going to have to put a clause in their rental agreement that states, “Must be okay with neighbor scream-singing Fiona Apple at 7am,” because I am a menace and forget the windows are open often.

In serendipitous moments, while walking the dog I found a copy of Fiona Apple’s The Idler Wheel on CD, soaking in a puddle on the sidewalk alongside tossed Polaroids and Christmas decorations. I had to rescue it. It’s one of my favorite albums, and now my vinyl copy has a sidewalk CD companion.
