White text on a black field: “Seems pretty self-explanatory to me.” Lukas shrugged. “You turned me into some kinda vampire and now you're like my immortal dad or some shit.” He picked up the pack of cigarettes in his pile of belongings and popped one in his mouth. “I get to come back from the dead and you get a servant to do your infernal bidding.” He lit up and took a long drag, blowing the smoke toward the bathroom. “Something like that?” “To have infernal bidding, I would need to be some sort of demon, I think.” He sat up on the foot of the bed. “If you were a Niflese vampire, you would be compulsively subservient to your sire. Lucky for you, you are a different breed.” Ignoring, for the moment, the roughly three million texts, calls, and voicemails crowding his notifications bar, Lukas checked the time on his phone – 3:22 p.m. Fuck. He was going to be late meeting up with Sean and the guys. “Are we still in Salem?” he asked abruptly.

White text on a black field: Darien visibly deflated. “We only share one parent,” he grumbled. “I will have you know that I am very popular with ladies and homosexuals.” “Oh my god, you can't say that” The conversation dropped away around Lukas as he noticed movement on the other side of the portal out of the corner of his eye. “Tyler!” he hissed, seeing a fluffy lock of strawberry blond hair and a lush green eye peek around the edge of his door. The boy was always sneaking into Lukas's room to steal his weed; well, the joke was on him today, because Lukas was out. He didn't know how Tyler managed to be so quiet on his new goat legs. The door opened the rest of the way, revealing that the intruder was Sean, not Tyler. His voice was muffled as he called Lukas's name and crept into the room, frowning as he found it empty. Watching him from the closet like this brought back memories he wanted to forget and his chest tightened.

29. Saturday Snippet & I'm skipping the last 2 questions because I don't have anything to market & quantifying what I've done this month (aside from pick up like 40 hours of overtime at work) will be tedious. I guess I drew this Emily also. By the end of the day I'll have read Thursday Murder Club.

Is everything okay?” Roxy sounded more awake the longer she spoke. Her aunt’s voice was muffled, like she was covering the microphone on her phone, as she spoke again. “Stop it. I’m on the phone.” “Er, yeah, everything’s okay. I just saw you called last night. Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner-” “It’s fine. You were on a date, right? Did you have fun?” The wry tone of her aunt's voice told her exactly what kind of fun she meant and Vale mumbled an embarrassed affirmative, feeling her cheeks flush. Roxy cackled. “Good. It was closed. “If he dies somehow, do you think we’ll still be able to go home?” he asked out loud before realizing that he was alone. “Wow, okay,” he said, popping a new cigarette out of his pack – the last one, he noticed with irritation – and lit it before following his friends down the road. The architecture, the cobblestone roads, the weather – even the locals’ clothing – all evoked a city in some backwater European country two hundred years in the past. He definitely felt eyes on him as he trailed Darien and Emily. The tavern Darien took them to was packed with rugged, dirty men apparently on their lunch break from whatever manual labor they did to earn a living. The lively din of thirty tables’ chatter and joking dropped to a suspicious murmur as soon as Daried stepped through the door. If Lukas thought they were the center of attention before, he felt like they were now lit up in blinking neon signs as he followed Darien across the room to the bar, where three men in coal-stained overalls politely vacated their seats at a word from Darien.

White text on a black field: Of course, as someone who had never even imagined a dishwasher or garbage disposal before, this was not nearly enough information for Eli. He wanted to know how they worked and once the seal was broken on the dishwasher, he wanted to know about the water heater and the TV and cars. Vale very quickly realized that, despite using these things daily, her knowledge of how they work was barely more than Eli's, and she'd almost attempted to sidetrack him from creating in her the existential horror of being a witless peasant benefitting from the good graces of electronics wizards with sex until she realized it'd been nearly three weeks since he'd had a proper bath. She didn't know how he managed to smell good after that long and she had to keep living with that uncertainty as she sat on the couch reading up on how TVs work while Eli borrowed her shower. Half an hour later, she was no closer to understanding how the damn TV worked, but that didn't matter, because Eli was sparkling clean and moving promptly onto challenging more of her preconceptions by asking to borrow some of her clothes. Was she that butch? Sure, she wore boxer briefs most of the time and any time it was above freezing she was prone to throwing on some shorts and a t-shirt if she wasn't expected anywhere. “I don't mind…” she had said, trailing off as her brain tripped on what he was asking and he was gone, rifling through her closet, before it caught up. She genuinely didn't care what he borrowed but she couldn't decide if she shouldn't guide the process somehow.

They really needed it tonight, seeing as Sean had managed to get himself bitten by a stray dog on his way home the night before. Luckily he could still play his trumpet but he'd spent his morning in the urgent care and then they'd had to send him up to Salem to get the first of four rabies shots. Combined, they were about as helpful as one eager golden retriever but it was better than nothing. Once the equipment was set up, Lukas ordered himself a burger to enjoy while he waited for Gavin and Emily to show up and laid claim to their usual booth near the pinball machine. He and Gavin had an ongoing rivalry over the high score that he was currently winning. At least, he had been. Looking at the scores now, before he sat down, he saw that someone using the initials “AAA” had blown him completely out of the water. Well, that was an understatement. AAA had gotten the maximum possible score. Twice. And their third-place score was triple Lukas's best.

White text on a black field: When he'd been walking for what felt like two hours, Emily having dozed off around the time he got down into the water, and he still hadn't happened upon a clearing, Lukas considered turning back. It was dark. He was tired of having wet feet. Emily's arms had shifted in her sleep and she was fully choking him at this point, which was just another layer of discomfort. And as a final insult, it was starting to rain. But if he went back, he worried Darien would feel rejected and leave him to kill his friends and family, so he kept going, hoping his destination would be just around the river bend. And after another hour, it was. By this point, he was so irritated with Darien’s shit directions that he was fully prepared to pick a fight. Darien’s place was much less refined than Euphrosyne's. The rough, log cabin squatted, toad-like, behind a low, crumbling stone wall that looked like it had been started and stopped a hundred times and somehow still hadn’t made it all the way around the building and its assorted, overgrown gardens. Calling them gardens was, in fact, stretching the word almost to the breaking point. All of its charm came from the stunning wisteria vine in full bloom that wove in and out between the logs of the cabin. It did make him a bit nervous about the structural integrity of the cabin though.

He looked surprised when Lukas gave his hand a good shake. “Your friend's lucky to be alive. If I hadn't happened to visit Euphie today the unicorns would have devoured her completely.” “That's definitely the impression I got when Ríoghán stabbed me,” Lukas agreed, fingering the hole in his shirt. It was a shame; he liked this shirt. His wound was completely healed, though. Too bad it wasn't him that got their arm munched, he thought. It might take him a while but Darien had implied anything short of cremation or vaporization wouldn't kill him now. The rocks in his head clacked together, sparking an idea. “So, uh, Euphie-” “You will call me Hag or Euphrosyne or you'll be puking up slugs for a week,” she said irritably. Lukas couldn't stomach watching what was going on with Emily's dismemberment for long but it looked like she was hard at work cleaning up the wound so it could heal clean. -er. Cleaner. Lukas doubted even faerie magic could make it look completely unlike a massacre.

White text on a black field: Tuktuk stomped an excited circle around Lukas. “More treatos, bigjob! Follow Tuktuk now!” The creature collapsed into a generally spherical shape and rolled off across the clearing at a speed Lukas would have struggled to keep up with before he was turned. The really convenient thing about following Tuktuk was that the little guy was an eager little juggernaut. Bushes, trees, and lesser stones all fell before Tuktuk as it carved an unrepentant path of destruction through the woods. Lukas almost felt bad about the ecological disaster in progress as he kept pace a few meters back but he had to assume that this was just the way Tuktuks got around and the miles-long, zigzagging tract of ruined countryside was the natural order of things. Of course, if that were true, he might have expected to run across at least one other Tuktuk track in the two hours he spent following his new pal. Which he didn't, but it was convenient to look the other way, especially knowing that getting home would be a no-brainer now.

It’s not something my caste can use.” Vale stared down at him. That was possibly the most confident, knowledgeable thing he’d said in the entire time she’d known him. “Where are you from, anyway? Where are they still adhering to a caste system?” “A little country in the mountains very, very far from here,” he answered. “We’ve been cut off from your, er, the modern world for a very long time."

One second, they were weaving through the crowd; the next, Vale was pinned against the stage looking up into the storm brewing on Gavin's face. He'd managed to turn and catch himself on the stage, preventing her from getting crushed, and she could see he was seconds from starting a fight. At least he stopped to check on her first. “You okay?” She could barely hear him between the speaker three feet to her left and the hammering of her heartbeat in her ears, but she nodded. This was her moment, she realized, and it was slipping away as Gavin turned to fight the guy who pushed the guy who bumped into them. Vale did something in that moment that she'd never done before – she reached out and took what she wanted by the lapels.

White text on a black field: “It is only an hour when I do it,” Darien countered stepping aside and gesturing for Lukas to come inside. “Yeah, well I can't fly, motherfucker.” The inside of the cabin was significantly more lived-in than the outside and Lukas needed several moments to collect himself before he ventured further than the cobblestone entry littered with shoes of various styles, including Lukas's missing pair of Timberlands. In a lot of ways, it was like walking into a disorganized crow's nest; every surface was covered in books, papers, strange devices, and decorative objects. The walls were crowded with thousands of insects both familiar and foreign mounted carefully inside display cases and shadow boxes. Wisteria flowers dangled from the ceiling in places and in one corner, a giant orb weaver with a long, red abdomen waited patiently near one of several glowing glass orbs in sconces arranged around the room near the ceiling. “Does the spider help with rent?”
