Let’s check in on our water supply: a thread 🧵

It looks like WA has been participating in “dry January” this year. The last 30 days have been dry across most of the state. On top of that, the past week has been warmer than normal in the Cascades and Olympics, which isn’t helping our snowpack.

Coal + gas fail once again during a winter storm.

20GW of generation went offline in America's largest grid during Winter Storm Fern.

DOE's policies to keep old coal plants running + expand gas dependency make our grid LESS RELIABLE + risk MORE BLACKOUTS

Two of my greatest loves: Skagit County and WSU
Over the past 15 years, the Skagit Valley has emerged as a national hot spot for innovations in grain breeding, artisan-scale milling, and experimental baking.

“We thought if we could get specialty wheat to grow here, you could get more per bushel. It turns out to be true.”
How Artisan Grains Helped Skagit County Rebuild Its Economy
When the last local pea processing plant closed in this part of Washington state, the county’s port commission invested millions to help farmers pivot to high-value grains.

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

💧 Washington state in the US experienced record #flooding last month.

But that doesn't mean the region's #drought is over. Rather, flooding may indicate the drought could persist.

Baby steps! The Cascades saw a lot more snow this week – enough to wash out the red on the NRCS basin snowpack map. We need consistent snowstorms to catch up to normal, and need that snowpack to hold on through spring to avoid drought this summer. But we’re slowly moving in the right direction ❄️

The IPCC said humans cause climate change. Is that why Trump quit it?
Withdrawing from the world’s premier climate science organization supports the president’s views about global warming.

“It’s an open legal question whether a president can unilaterally withdraw from a treaty that has been ratified by the Senate. That issue has never been decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. Another ... is whether the next president could rejoin without new ratification. Both of those are unsettled.”
