Someone needed to take care of his mental health the cheap way—hit him over the head with a shovel (that was what they'd done to neighbor Paul: whacked him when he wasn't looking). "You can hear me, can't you ... what-are you?" the invisible voice said next to my ear, and I jolted with fear. Great, I'm being haunted by a ghost. I looked around warily. Barbed wire fence glinted at the distant tree line that surrounded the trailer park, and a tattered white flag hung off a branch displaying the crest of the House of Hades —a horrifying skeleton dog with burning crimson eyes. It was a hellhound.

Extract from my post-TRoS fic, no grave: “Rey, when I saw your past, I didn’t know Palpatine was part of it. I thought your parents were strangers, drunks—” “Palpatine,” Rey bites on the name, “was a liar. He lied to you, Ben. I went back to Jakku, and I found Plutt. Gave him enough of my credits and promised more to know that whatever he told me about my parents would be the absolute truth. Not words from a power-crazed Emperor.” Ben searches her face, his own features sinking into a frown. As she talks, sorting out the tangles in their story, his eyes darken to the point that she knows, if Palpatine wasn’t already destroyed, he’d go this minute to Exegol and plunge a saber into his chest. “My parents, it turns out—they were just drunks. Nobodies that came to the planet for parts and eventually died in the sands. Plutt even gave me their names, which he had in his books as a record of the transaction when they... when they sold me. Beren is my father’s name.” She’d brushed the sand off the pages she took from him—low tech meant no awkward questions, that was Plutt’s philosophy— and there it had been, in Basic, written by the hand of Plutt himself. She can see the three sentences now. Less than 10 words total. Simm Beren. Product: Daughter, Rey. Price: 20 drink portions. Rey swallows thickly. She continues. “I made sure to ask around. See if anyone who might've been around could corroborate the story. Five scavengers recognised me as that little girl, left sobbing at Plutt's side. They all assumed I remembered. That was that. No bounty hunter, Imperial or otherwise, ever came to Jakku to hunt them down. The memories we saw, together, were constructed by Palpatine. He wanted a new body and for the last Skywalker to die. He used this thing between us to trap us, Ben.” An awful silence surrounds them, the cottage. The ocean is calmer outside and the wind has died down but Ben’s Force signature thrums with anger.

The fjor nodded. Covering his amulet with his left hand, he passed his right over the soldier’s forehead. A serenity filled the soldier’s face, shining out through the blood with a beatific smile. Astrid had never seen it before now, but she knew of it. The fjor’s victim was now gone, lost in the memory of a dream. It could be of a girl back home; it could be the taste of his mother’s cooking. It could be a triumphant swing of his sword against an enemy’s armour. His mind chose the memory—the Draumr magic merely guided him to it. Until his captor decided to release him, he would be trapped in that sweet euphoria, the pain packed away in a box and pushed into a corner of his mind.

All that had to happen there was people to go “This is not a homework assignment, you don’t need to prepare, just read the damn book”. But no. Instead, we have to blow up one person’s stupidity as an example of what’s happening everywhere to fit a preconceived narrative.

She had to sink her fingers into his hair and reach up onto her tiptoes to kiss him. With one hand, he grasped for her waist, while the other frantically waved the candlestick to and fro, seeking a place for it to rest. At last, he found the mantelpiece. Smiling against his lips, Rey took him in her arms again. Touch—certainly, romantic touch—was not something she knew much of. But there was something exhilarating about having his hands around her waist. Despite their mutual fear, their inherent clumsiness, she, at last, felt secure. In this world of treason, he felt like an anchor. Her head filled with ideas, images of a farmstead and waking up drenched in sunlight, his long body stretched out beside hers, his arms toned from honest work and wrapped around her belly, keeping her in endless delight with his lips on hers. It was a reality that could never be, and she never wanted to let it go.

Tried again with this book. Now on chapter 4 but I have to ask – why is this man described as a one-man band for weaponry? All I’m seeing is Dick van Dyke.

winter was a savage, untamed beast when it came to Heimdar. The wind roared, the ice clawed, and the snow climbed up the walls of longhouses, cabins and even palaces, seeking entrance to its prey—the meek and cold humans inside. But Heimdarians were strong. Stronger than the winter. They stoked their fires, killed their cattle and prayed to The Five that they would outlive the beast. When the beast finally gave up, the Heimdarians opened their doors and enjoyed the remnants; the snow drifts that became an armoury for snowball fights, and the icy rivers that grew thick enough for even the broadest warrior to don his blades and skate upon them.

Astrid always dreamed the same dream—and if she sat there in her cot daydreaming any longer, she would be late, and her family would wake. Holding her breaths, praying to The Five that she would make no noise, she dressed quickly and tiptoed past the extinguished hearth. Once she got to the door, she sat on a stool and made a fumbling grasp for her boots. A warm guff of air passed over her the shell of her ear as one of the goats wondered if her hair would make for good hay. Astrid ducked, and the goat lost interest. Standing, she threw her thick cloak over her shoulders, fastened it, and headed out into the light.
