He spoke in the spiteful tone of a boy who was fed up with not getting it, of not even really knowing what it was - but now the shoe was on the other foot, and by golly, he was going to make them pay. Banning books is a desperate rearguard action by the terminally afraid. But I wonder if it is also in part an attempt at revenge - the anxious, spiteful, fearful, revenge of the ones who can only use their crayons to delineate who they think does not belong.

I am forced to conclude, given that people wouldn't so relentlessly advertise these misbegotten, misshapen, woefully twee clothes THAT PEOPLE ARE BUYING THEM - Stop It. They look like someone deliberately made ….. a sack, out of some left over laura ashley fabric and a shit ton of navy hessian. Onion shaped, pear shaped, those cute little too long sleeves so your adorable little fingers poke out to clutch your fecken flat white. Bits hanging out - SEWN TO THE HEM - so it looks like you didn't tuck in the bed sheet you use as underwear but you don't actually have to go to the trouble of using a bed sheet as underwear. Fecken the poor over-worked face of Frida Khalo, somewhere, doesn't matter where. Big old cute shoes like you're Pippy Longstocking's nanna. Christ on a bike. Young people will probably not know what I am talking about - and for that alone, I am thinking of lying about my age and trying for a better spread on the old ad pane. I can't tell you how much this earth coloured, woman-of-acertain-age-but-still-designer-quirky grift gets my goat. Ok people do it well and look amazing but these spuriously "Danish" wonk-fest brands are so damn awful.

One of Pierre’s current paintings. He’s so good. Always has been. When we met at St Martin’s we all knew how good he was, even way back then. I wish he was as good at the smarm and sell - he hasn’t even got a gallery. But he can paint. Obsessively.

Just written a Banned Books Week post about this that says exactly the same thing.
