San Francisco's Vision Zero efforts—to eliminate roadway fatalities and severe injuries—have failed because the City hasn't focused on making it safer and faster to walk, bike, and take public transit, which would help people shift trips from cars to walking, biking, and transit.

Valencia Street’s curbside bikeways are now installed between 19th and 23rd Street, replacing the center bikeway and transforming the street into one that is safer and better for business, thanks to people who supported @StreetsForward.org’s ‘Better Valencia’ campaign 👏 Thank you 🙏

Your reminder that SFMTA prioritizes cars and driver convenience over people’s safety.

SFMTA could approve a citywide No Turn on Red policy if it wanted, and Mayor Lurie can direct SFMTA to propose it.

The recent car crashes that destroyed two businesses’ parklets highlight the negative impacts of cars on our city and the need for policy and infrastructure to help people shift trips from cars to bikes and public transit as well as physical infrastructure to protect parklets.

We congratulate Director Kirschbaum on being named SFMTA’s permanent Director of Transportation and look forward to working with her to transform San Francisco’s streets and transportation system and help people shift trips from cars to bikes, public transit, and other sustainable transportation.

SFMTA beginning construction of the curbside bikeways on Valencia Street—replacing the flawed center bikeway—is a great step forward.

Now, the City needs to extend the curbside bikeways to Cesar Chavez Street and widen the bikeways for the entirety of Valencia, ideally in 2025.

SFMTA’s plan to not expand parking meter hours in the evening and on Sundays is disastrous and inequitable, and runs counter to the goals and policies SFMTA and the City claim to prioritize. SFMTA must expand parking meter hours to fund Muni and other transportation improvements.

SFMTA should be making daylighting intuitive by installing bike corrals, bikeshare stations, planters or benches in daylighting spaces.

In the meantime, ignoring state law and allowing cars to be store within 20 feet of crosswalks decrease public safety.

We need leadership now.

The Board of Supervisors unanimously rejected the appeal of the Mid-Valencia Curbside Bikeway Project, and construction of the curbside bikeways will begin on February 10 👏

Thank you to everyone who emailed and/or gave in-person public comment!

The Valencia Curbside Bikeway Project—which was approved by the SFMTA Board in November and supposed to begin construction in early January—was appealed by 3–5 merchants.

Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie has announced that Alicia John-Baptiste, CEO of SPUR, will be his Chief of Infrastructure, Climate & Mobility.

Given Alicia and SPUR’s visionary, thoughtful and data-oriented leadership, I’m hopeful for the future of San Francisco.

Did you or someone you know abstain or vote No on Prop K—closing Upper Great Highway to private cars and establishing public open recreation space aka creating a park—but have now accepted the outcome—Prop K won 55/45—and are optimistic about the future park? If so, please DM me.

I’ll have more to say about Jeff Tumlin at some point, but for now, Jeff led SFMTA through a tumultuous time and helped the Agency improve and recover, especially with Muni. I’m grateful for Jeff’s remarkable leadership and service during his tenure and I wish Jeff only the best.

The California Coastal Commission approved the permit authorizing the closure of Upper Great Highway to private car traffic (aka converting the space into a park and public outdoor recreation space)!

This is a massive step towards the creation a new, full-time oceanfront park 👏

Instead, the City should install physical infrastructure—like planters, benches, bike corrals, large blocks of granite, or even just two plastic posts—in these spaces to (1) make it physically impossible to park a car there and (2) enhance the street and surrounding neighborhood.

Painting curbs takes lots of time and money—time and money SFMTA doesn't have—and doesn't stop people from parking in spaces that you are required to have daylighting. Worse still, these curbs will need to be repainted every 2–3 years—or sooner if people paint over the red paint.
December 10, 2024 at 8:11 PM
San Francisco is required by state law to prohibit parking a car within 20 feet of a crosswalk.

But—instead of following state law—the City is delaying implementation and proposing to paint 10,000+ curbs.

The City should install physical infrastructure in these spaces instead.

California is launching an e-bike incentive program with $3 million funding. By comparison, the State has given $1.5 billion in electric car rebates.

Funding for e-bike incentives is abysmally low—we need more!

It’s finalized: Prop K won 55% to 45% with 206,042 votes in favor—Upper Great Highway will be converted into a park!

To put that in context, Prop K got more yes votes than Mayor-Elect Lurie and Mayor Breed got in first-choice votes combined and more than Lurie got in total votes!
