A warning for our times:

“Authoritarianism is harder to recognize than it used to be,” but “When citizens must think twice about criticizing or opposing the government because they could credibly face government retribution, they no longer live in a full democracy.”

From Leavitt to McMahon to Noem and now Means, Trump is strategically placing women in highly visible top jobs. And arguably, the goal here is two-fold: (1) soften the face of fascism, and (2) use the presence of token women to defend the administration against claims of sexism and misogyny.

Why is the administration trying to get rid of Head Start?

Because it challenges their narrative of waste, fraud, and abuse. And because it gets in the way of their efforts to trap people in precarity and make them easier to exploit.

My latest for @msnbc.com:

Opinion | Head Start is government that works. No wonder the Trump administration wants to get rid of it.
The gutting of Head Start would force vulnerable people to labor in more difficult or demeaning conditions for the benefit of the privileged.

Today is an excellent day to remind all of you Americans that the Brazilian electoral court banned Bolsonaro from running in the next election within six months from his attempted insurrection. By now, 14 months later, he’s had his passport confiscated so he won’t escape from punishment.

When Roe fell, I was stunned at how many people thought it wouldn't impact them. And whenever I brought up IVF and fertility treatments, people told me I was exaggerating. But anyone who's ever come across advocates for so-called "embryo adoption" knew where this was all headed.

A few days ago I met a pal, an OB-GYN who is working at a service that sends abortion pills (mifepristone and misoprostol) to women who need them in states that ban abortion. She asked me to help spread the word about how to use the service, and asked me to ask you guys to pass on the info. 1/6

Post-Dobbs, there are already prosecutions for miscarriages, and legally-binding theocratic proclamations like this will turbocharge them.
