It is! And then, around 1911, when things started to get a little dodgy for the Hapsburgs, they saved up and hopped on a boat and ended up in Cleveland!

Probably also explains a lot about my hobbies haha

That sounds like my first masters thesis... only instead of word documents, it was hundreds of note cards laid out across the living room floor

Well that's really nifty! The most interesting thing from my family comes from my paternal grandmother's maternal side. I had a great times three aunt and uncle who worked for the Hapsburgs, as a textile conservator or something to that effect, and a pastry chef, respectively.

and everything I'd seen and read and heard during those preceding years all hit me at once, and I truly wept.

I went back every day that it was there, to sit and read the names and imagine what their people had been like.

...the enormity of it never truly hit home until a section of the quilt was displayed at my university for several days in 1994.

As I sat across from that 144 square feet of fabric, I felt like I'd been punched in the gut...

I came of age during the AIDS epidemic, but because I was so far removed from it (grew up in the Midwest, lived in the 'burbs, went to a small university in a rural area, didn't know anyone "personally affected" *that I knew of* at the time)...
