Currently researching atmospheric sources and transport of PFAS ("forever chemicals").
Fantastic venue for the first UK Atmospheric chemistry conference in The Guildhall York. An excellent opportunity to bring UK atmospheric chemists together and hear about the breadth of current research in the field.

Today we made history.

Countries have come together & agreed the new Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste and Pollution that will provide the 🌍 with robust, independent science.

The first measurements of TFA in UK rivers have revealed concerningly high concentrations. This highlights the need for wider monitoring of TFA in the UK.
🚨 New study out today: Fidra & the University of York
reveal TFA in 98% of sites sampled in UK rivers.

Some sites had amongst the highest levels ever recorded globally.

This persistent PFAS is polluting our water👉 We need a UK-wide ban on PFAS now.

Changing the PFAS definition could exclude concerning chemicals such as TFA and F-gases containing -CF3 groups. These substances share the same problematic C-F bond which gives PFAS their extreme persistence, so should remain classified as a PFAS, as they are under the unambiguous OECD definition.
Sign-on campaign: Preserving Scientific Integrity in the PFAS Definition. Scientists raise concerns about ongoing efforts to redefine PFAS and potentially exclude certain fluorinated chemical subgroups from the widely accepted 2021 OECD definition. www.ipcp.ch/news/sign-on...

Excited to present my work on TFA production from long-lived source gases (refrigerants and anaesthetics) at EGU next Monday morning (28th). Come and chat from 11.15 for a first look at the latest modelling results.

The delayed 2024-5 UK REACH work programme has finally been published, showing progress on controlling and restricting harmful chemicals in the UK is still stalling. In 4 years of operation, the UK has not restricted a single substance.
