Encountering this godwit always makes me think about the changes we have both seen in the 29 years since we first met, especially the planting of non-native trees all over Iceland wadertales.wordpress.com/2022/06/18/i...
Longevity record!
Last night, @washwader.bsky.social recaught this Black-tailed Godwit, first caught and ringed 29 years ago.
The metal ring was wearing thin (and was replaced) but the bird is still going strong.

Productivity 🐣 of gannets that have survived #avianflu does not differ from those that have never been infected - BUT productivity since the 2022 HPAI outbreak is worryingly low.

Very cool new #seabird paper showing no difference in breeding success between healthy and black-eyed gannets, but a worrying overall decline in productivity following the #avianflu outbreak. 🦠🐣

Effect of a previous high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAIV) infection on the breeding success of Northern Gannets

🪹 | Seabirds that survived recent bird flu outbreaks have continued to reproduce, although overall breeding performance remains notably low, according to a new study.

The study has looked at breeding success in Northern Gannets at two locations during 2023.

These two studies do not contradict each other but reinforce the desperate need to get strongly regulated and strictly enforced MPAs in place - not just boxes on a map with little effect

How is that possible? Quite simple - the second paper only looks at a small subset of strictly regulated MPAs. They have good enforcement, and may never had any fishing in the first place - so very little occurs there now
