Sucker for #europeanparties, #eudemocracy and #eureform.
Monnet "saw politicians as short-termist by nature, egotistical by nature" -- this is why we have political parties, to create long-projects that go beyond politicians' self-interest. And this is why we need strong #europeanparties that citizens can join and vote for, and who choose representatives.

In its 2026 budgetary plan, the APPF asked Parliament for an additional 8 staff, to account for the increase in #europeanparties and foundations and for its expanded tasks under the new regulation. The @europarl.europa.eu heard that call and granted 0 additional staff.

Not "our militaries", but "our military", @andriuskubilius.ec.europa.eu .

You can't have war-ready logistics with 27 separate armies. We need one single European army.

Oppose Elon Musk all you want (and I do), but he is not wrong here. The head of the EU's executive should really be elected* by European citizens.

*not necessarily directly as in the US but, in line with parliamentary tradition, via #europeanparties.

On Wednesday, national government representatives (Coreper II) will discuss the updated regulation on #europeanparties, paving the way for its adoption and entry into force by 1st Jan 2026!

European democracy is not nationally-elected members of the executive telling European legislators that their decisions are unacceptable and a mistake that must be corrected.

The proposal is adopted.

And another one! "For the People" applied for registration as the European political foundation of the European Left Alliance for the People and the Planet (@leftallianceeu.bsky.social).
This follows ESN's Sovereignty Foundation, which applied two weeks ago.

Dear @reneweurope.bsky.social,
Is this supposed to indicate that your member parties, including Macron's Renaissance or Germany's @freiedemokraten.bsky.social, officially support a federal Europe?
August 27, 2025 at 9:24 AM
A strong European response to foreign blackmail requires a strong political union, not 27 national leaders visiting Washington to plead with the bully. While the phrasing is clearly a sign of escalation, this is merely one more example of why our current Union is no longer sufficient. #eudemocracy

The fact that, a full year later, Mario #Draghi 's essential reform proposals have gone nowhere only highlights what I (along with generations of federalists before me) have been saying all along: a political union is now a prerequisite for major #EUreform, and not the other way around. 1/5

👉 It's democracy, stupid! 👈
Following the EU's botched deal with the US, French EU Minister Haddad talks about "a European political awakening" and EPP chief Manfred Weber calls for Europe to strengthen "its political and economic unity" (via @politico.eu). But are they even pushing for this?
August 4, 2025 at 7:46 AM
According to @politico.eu, the next State of the European Union address (#SOTEU) is to take place on 10 Sept in the morning. Wednesday morning... Is there absolutely no consideration that an evening/prime time slot would enable citizens to tune in, even for a bit? Does this not matter at all?

Is the @europarl.europa.eu so committed to transparency that it has webstreams for meetings that are not actually webstreamed?!
😲🤔
July 3, 2025 at 8:09 AM
MP Sammy Mahdi points out the obvious, but he is indeed right: the EU does not need 27 slightly less small militaries, but one single large and well-equipped European army. Member states' sovereignty here runs directly against ensuring Europe's long-term security.

In particular, do not miss @eudemocracy.eu's Initiative on Transparency for European Party Funding (ITEF) which compiles clear and concrete proposals for much-needed #transparency on the funding of #europeanparties! 👇

Note that things were not always like this; the co-financing rate used to stand at 25%. It is unclear at this point whether the agreement upholds the @ec.europa.eu's proposal to bring this rate down to 0% in election years (when you would expect #europeanparties to reach out to citizens the most...)
June 17, 2025 at 2:59 PM
For the record, many #europeanparties do not rely on donations at all for their private funding (green) -- instead, most of that private funding comes from contributions from national member parties (blue), which are mostly funded national public funding... For more, see epfo.eu!

The result of this "reorganisation" is a smaller EU presence around the world, precisely when member states are likely to reduce their own presence. Instead, EU delegations should expand their number and role, and progressively replace all member state embassies.

A gentle reminder to all the conservatives (rightfully) celebrating Europe today/tom: Schuman & Monnet's plan was not that of a Member State-driven Europe, but always of a *federal* Europe.
You may disagree, but at least acknowledge you do not actually support their historic plan.

At any rate, the text above is still being discussed in trilogue and the @europarl.europa.eu & @consilium.europa.eu have yet to agree on a text.
In the meantime, national member parties are free to sign cooperation deals with Vladimir Putin without endangering the funding of their European party! 🥂
