Organelles do NOT have a single uniform pH.
And if you think they must, because “protons diffuse fast,” this paper is for you.
A thread on why that assumption is wrong; and what we found instead. 🧵 1/n

Load-dependent power-law exponent in creep rupture of heterogeneous materials
Creep tests on heterogeneous materials under subcritical loading typically show a power-law decay in strain rate before failure, with the exponent often considered material dependent but independent o...

Target cell cortical tension regulates macrophage trogocytosis - Nature Cell Biology
Cornell et al. show that target cells with low cortical tension induce macrophages to preferentially trogocytose, or engulf in small fragments, whereas target cells with high cortical tension tend tow...

Internship opportunity for a Master Student
@symux.bsky.social and I are looking for someone to work with us to answer this tantalizing question: does a phagocyte regulates its cell volume during and after phagocytosis?

If you are interested, please do not hesitate to contact us in DM or by e-mail.

We introduce a microfluidic device that can trap, analyze, and release individual microparticles on demand using membrane deformation driven by pneumatic pressure. The setup uses a deformable membrane suspended over an array of traps.

We introduce a modular biosensing strategy using targeted lipid microparticles to monitor phagosomal acidification in real time. These biomimetic particles are engineered to couple receptor-specific uptake with fluorescence-based pH reporting in macrophages.

We have TWO papers out in @jcb.org this month! 🎉

First, @kirstin-rollins.bsky.social showed that macrophages nibble adherent target cells, like the ones found in solid tumors, instead of phagocytosing. Amazing movies from @sareenfiaz.bsky.social
