Retired legislator. Active rabble rouser. Perpetual gardener & desert tortoise caregiver.
Walked outside to find this hummingbird in the garden, but I was really looking across the way at a hawk being harassed by the local crows.

The birds are suddenly noisy, active, and fighting over territory/ so nesting season is fast approaching.

Please go buy American Carnage.

Share it with others.

It will be difficult- but essential - to help understand what the US has lost- and identify what needs to be done to regain some stability as people grieve and mourn the loss of a once high-functioning federal workforce.

In 2012 I ran for Congress

This interview popped up recently to remind me that issues like #immigration reform, cannabis & taxes have not changed

I was outspent by a wealthy moderate Dem- he loaned his own campaign nearly $2 million

I lost by 700 votes

In days gone by- people would go to the zoo to feed the #elephants peanuts.

In 2022, I decided to feed them something more healthy & substantial: 3 truckloads of branches from a ficus tree in my front yard, that my mother had planted 50 years before.

Fresh greens are essential!

1/ Today @RepScottPeters attended a local Dem Club meeting

He lamented ICE funding (“more than for #USMC”)

I thanked him for attempting to inspect #SanDiego detention facilities & suggested his office submit DAILY inspection requests when ICE illegally demands a 7 day notice

July 4 8 pm: A friend just left the San Diego Fashion Valley theater and said he was asked for identification by #ICE officers at the trolley station. Also- the mall is deserted.

He says they’re hanging out near the transit station at the southwest corner of the shopping center.

My former colleague US Senator #AlexPadilla4CA was doing the right thing to question the Homeland Security Secretary in Los Angeles

This arrest & detention of a US Senator is horrific

We need all Americans to respond loudly & peacefully, before all of us are subjected to this abusive behavior

It’s iris day!

All these irises came from one cutting 12 years ago.

Now they’re all over the garden, and all open on the same day.

It’s a lesson in “carpe diem” - these flowers are “1 day wonders” that will be gone by sunset.

One plant produces a few flowers each year.

Do orgs like @redcrossny.bsky.social have access to this facility & others holding people under the “Alien Enemies” act?

Under the Geneva Conventions: They are entitled to medical care, humane treatment, etc.
