Today my wife, Chris, and I announced our retirement from professional journalism. In my case, 50 years at 10 newspapers and a half-dozen websites — the last dozen with Times of San Diego. It's been fun and rewarding (including six tonight at #jawards2025 of SD Press Club). Thx for tips and reading!

Hey folks 👋 I'm the reporter who revealed immigration agents detained 170+ citizens this year

My fellowship w/ProPublica has been incredible, but it wraps January. I'm looking for my next gig. Please reach out to share leads & opportunities! [email protected]

The late Bruce McCall, a National Lampoon artist legend, appears in current New Yorker. (The San Diego fair also is satire.)

Yet she persisted.
Reporter: “Are you committed to releasing the full video?”

Trump: “Didn't I just tell you that?”

Reporter: “You said that it was up to Sec. Hegseth.”

Trump: “You are the most obnoxious reporter in the whole place…You are an obnoxious, actually a terrible reporter.”

Hope this doesn’t fall prey to TL;DR Syndrome.
There are a lot of unknowns about the news media in the next twenty-five years. But we can, at least, dress for the weather. Check out CJR’s Journalism 2050 issue.

San Diego isn’t New York, apparently. FB posts by husband of Sara Ochoa, who lost to Will Rodriguez-Kennedy in recent Dems chair election:

Are you happy now, Bari Weiss?

LESLEY STAHL: You contributed to the toxic culture. You were out there pounding, insulting people

MARJORIE TAYLOR GREENE: You've contributed to it as well

STAHL: I want you to respond to what you have done in terms of insulting people

MTG: I'd like for you to respond to that

What a week. On Monday, it was reported — although some said rumored — that Congressman Darrell Issa was considering a run for a seat in a potentially safer Texas district than his own CA-48th area. O...

My latest for Times of San Diego covers covers how prominent local activist, Arturo González was targeted by federal immigration officials after exposing a suspected undercover ICE vehicle while conducting a patrol in the neighborhood of Lincoln Heights.

John will defect to the BBC if we don’t support him.
This is a very good and unflappable job by John Berman of CNN. Worth watching whole segment.

BERMAN: Would it be legal for police in Arkansas to kill suspected drug dealers on a boat in a lake?

TOM COTTON: The premise of your question is not well-founded

BERMAN: The answer is no. It would not be legal to kill them.

I still treasure a New Yorker cover that Sy autographed for me years ago after a San Diego talk.
"Can you do investigative journalism from a position of neutrality?"

Still a tricky subject because if you're not neutral that suggests bias. But if you go where the facts go it doesn't.

Except that's illegal. If they're "terrorists" and combatants as the administration says then the law of armed conflict applies. "Take no prisoners" is a war crime
