Tea buddy

New #tolkien acquisition. They aren’t particularly valuable and they’re certainly in well-loved condition but these were my grandfather’s and my dad read these as a kid. This set is the 1966 edition but printed in 1973. I love the crests on the box and Tolkien’s own art on the covers
A set of The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy in a small, ragged paperback edition. The cover wore off the Fellowship and has been printed in pen on top to say The Fellwship of the Ring Part I One side of the red box the books came in with the crests of Fëanor, Idril Celebrindal, and Eärendil The other side of the red box with the crests of Elwe and Finwe and one of the crests of Lúthien Tinuviel The cover of The Hobbit with the hobbit floating down the river on a barrel with tall lanky trees to either side

As the parent of a crying toddler on a plane this weekend, I appreciate this. People were very patient and kind about it.

This little man has picked so many pomegranates while we’ve been visiting my grandma this weekend.

@virginicus.universeodon.com.ap.brid.gy correctly identified the plant as Betony, which is in the second line. The first two lines pretty clearly read “Ðeos wyrt þeman betonican nemned…” Wyrt is Old English word for plant or herb, which we retain in the word “wort” of “mugwort” or “St John’s Wort”.

I remember when the seats were this spacious for me
The short legs of a two year old sitting cross legged in an economy airplane seat. There’s at least four inches of empty space between his legs and the edge of the seat. He could probably lay down sideways in it and sleep but he won’t because, well, he’s two.

The milkweeds I see here have HUGE leaves and these epic seed pods that burst open and are full of fluff

How it started vs. how it’s going
An unbaked loaf of cinnamon raisin bread shaped like a dragon. The same loaf of dragon-shaped cinnamon raisin bread but decidedly chonky as it has been baked and grew tremendously in the oven. Happy Michaelmas, now go out and do Feats of STRENGTH

A friend of mine relates a most delightful anecdote about his grandmother:
She believes that Hallmark movie Sarah Plain and Tall starring Glenn Close and Christopher Walken is the best movie ever made and once she decided to watch all of Walken’s other films.

She didn’t like them so much.

My peaches are white flesh so they make this pale pink syrup (the jam is also a pale pink).
A jar with light shining through it, revealing actual “peach-colored” syrup inside. It’s funny that the color “peach” is so unrelated to the fruits that tend to be pale oranges and vibrant reds, with a rich orange flesh inside.

We barely made a dent in what’s on the tree.
Half of a giant American sink filled with smallish “white” peaches. They’re very peach and rose colored but the inner flesh is white and pink. A single branch of a peach tree hung with dozens and dozens of beautiful peaches. This is a tiny portion of the tree.
