Measles infects the respiratory tract and then spreads throughout the body. Symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose and a rash all over the body. Most deaths from measles are from complications related to the disease. Complications can include ❗️blindness, encephalitis - an infection causing brain swelling and potentially brain damage, severe diarrhoea and dehydration, ear infections and severe respiratory problems including pneumonia. One very rare, but lethal complication that can arise in measles-infected people is a specific type of encephalitis called subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), which affects one in 100,000 cases. This viral infection ❗️lies dormant in the body for six to eight years before neurological symptoms start❗️. These include loss of motor skills - like the ability to walk, loss of hearing, loss of vision, and brain damage. The disease often progresses to a coma and death. There is no cure. #Measles is incredibly dangerous for pregnant women and can result in pre-term birth and low birth weight. Complications are most common in children under five. They are particularly likely in children who are malnourished, especially those without enough vitamin A or those who have a weak immune system. However, having adequate nutrition, vitamin A or no pre-existing conditions is not a guarantee against developing measles complications. ⚠️Anyone who is not vaccinated is at risk. Treatment ❗️There is no specific treatment for measles. Caregiving should focus on relieving symptoms, making the person comfortable and preventing complications. Drinking enough water and treatments for dehydration can replace fluids lost to diarrhoea or vomiting. Doctors may use antibiotics to treat pneumonia and ear and eye infections. Prevention Community-wide #vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles. ⚠️❗️All children must be vaccinated with two doses of the measles vaccine. I'm often by the sea (Germany/Sylt). But I also love walks right through Hamburg. There are so many beautiful parks, the Alster, the Elbe, Planten un Blomen... The more varied the terrain and surroundings, the better; that's when I feel comfortable.

Für COVID-19-Schutzimpfungen gelten die allgemeinen Grundsätze des Rechts der Versorgung von Impfschäden und der Sozialen Entschädigung. Mit Wirkung zum 1. Januar 2024 wurde das Recht der Versorgung von Impfschäden in das SGB XIV überführt. Nach § 24 Satz 1 SGB XIV muss für einen Impfschaden eine gesundheitliche Schädigung vorliegen, die über das übliche Ausmaß einer Reaktion auf eine Schutzimpfung hinausgeht. Für Impfschäden, die im Zusammenhang mit Schutzimpfungen eingetreten sind, die seit dem 1. Januar 2024 insbesondere auf Grundlage der COVID-19-Vorsorgeverordnung vorgenommen wurden oder, im Fall einer Schutzimpfung, gegenüber einer Person, die in der privaten Krankenversicherung versichert ist, in einem dem Anspruch nach COVID-19-Vorsorgeverordnung entsprechenden Umfang vorgenommen wurde, besteht ein Anspruch auf Leistungen der Sozialen Entschädigung (§ 24 SGB XIV). Ein Anspruch besteht auch, wenn die Schutzimpfung von der zuständigen Landesbehörde öffentlich empfohlen und in ihrem Bereich vorgenommen wurde.

High R0, waning immunity and antigenic drift together suggest substantial seasonal circulation with a speculative guess of 20% or 30% of the population infected each year (often referred to as the "attack rate"). This is higher than flu due to R0 of ~6 rather than ~2. 13/17 At endemicity, circulation does not necessarily translate to disease burden. Based on robust vaccine effectiveness against severe outcomes, my speculative guess would be that infection to fatality rate (IFR) drops 10-fold from its original ~0.6% to a flu-like ~0.06%. 14/17 Together, this would suggest perhaps 40k or 100k deaths per year in the US from COVID at endemic state. Most infections would be relatively mild (just like flu), but there's enough of them that even a small fraction of severe outcomes add up. 15/17 This rapid increase across provinces is concerning and suggests that Omicron is outcompeting Delta in the current context in South Africa. I'd hope for modeling work using this S dropout data to better quantify relative fitness of Omicron vs Delta in the following days. 10/16

Da ihr Spezialgebiet winzige Dinge sind, die auf Partikeln in der Luft schweben, haben sie natürlich VIEL differenziertere Definitionen für all die verschiedenen Arten und Größen von Dingen in der Luft. Und so haben sie ihre eigene spezielle Definition von „luftgetragen“.

In der Krankenhausinfektionsprävention bezieht sich der Begriff jedoch speziell auf Infektionen, die sich über diese winzigen Atemaerosole verbreiten. Und das ist für die Infektionsprävention sinnvoll. Denn die Maßnahmen , die zur Verhinderung der Übertragung von größeren, durch Tröpfchen übertragenen Krankheitserregern und kleineren, durch Aerosole übertragenen Krankheitserregern ergriffen werden müssen, sind unterschiedlich. Doch auch hier gibt es ein Problem: Partikelgrößen lassen sich nicht eindeutig gegensätzlich darstellen. Partikelgrößen sind ein Kontinuum, und die Wahl, wo Tröpfchen und Aerosol getrennt werden, ist (weitgehend) willkürlich.

In der Epidemiologie von Infektionskrankheiten ist dies eine Oberkategorie, die alle verschiedenen Übertragungswege einer Infektion über die Luft von Mensch zu Mensch umfasst. Das bedeutet Krankheiten, die sich in großen Atemtröpfchen verbreiten, aber nicht lange in der Luft verweilen, und Krankheiten, die sich in winzigen Atemaerosolen (von Epidemiologen oft als „Tröpfchenkerne“ bezeichnet) einschleichen und stundenlang in der Luft schweben können. Obwohl manchmal von Tröpfchen und Tröpfchenkernen gesprochen wird, umfasst die Kategorie „luftübertragen“ beides. Das ist für Epidemiologen sinnvoll, da die statistischen Modellierungsansätze hierfür dieselben sind (nur mit unterschiedlichen Parametern).

mRNA vaccinations are a relatively new technology and have been administered to millions of people within a short period of time. A certain amount of skepticism about their potential effects is therefore entirely understandable. It is also understandable that hearing about a possible change in genetic material initially causes uncertainty. A great deal of knowledge about biology and the functioning of cells is required to recognize which statements are true and which are not, and to understand how mRNA vaccines work and why they are not "gene therapy." It is important to know that mRNA (messenger RNA) is naturally present in every cell of the human body – in the so-called cytoplasm. Human DNA, on the other hand, is always located inside the cell nucleus. However, the mRNA from vaccines does not reach there. It transports part of the SARS-CoV-2 blueprint exclusively into the cytoplasm, but cannot penetrate the nucleus of human cells.
