Commodore Format literally needed one sixth of a half page to smash RD with a correct 90% rating. KABOOM! (The loading screen is from the Excess 2018 RD Duology cart release, by the by...)

Rick Dangerous

The fake Wilhelm Scream. The Indy. The Pokey Stick. The TRAPS! And the death throes! Ladies and Geman Spatulas - it can only be Ricky D on the C sixty C. Platformers on the #C64 don't come much better than RD. The sequal, I think is better, but this is glory. Play it.

Cauldron

You think I'd time these better? 🎃 Certain games on the #C64 are just so fondly remembered and literally EVERYONE owned a copy. This is one such. I had no patience for it as a kid, as I had no idea what I was meant to do. Still now, just played, I don't. But lordy - she's good.

June 1992 and the still glorious-looking original design phase of Commodore Format is reviewing a budget game with a 2-page spread. And deservedly so. The Bod Squad is a hiudden gem on the #C64 - check it out!

Bod Squad, The

I think I picked this up LATE in the #C64 Day and you know what, if you like platformers / Rick Dangerous, this is a DECENT game. Great production values, brilliant movement and GFX & SFX. For a BUDGET game. It really is very good. If you have not played it - do so today!
November 13, 2025 at 8:40 AM
Commodore Format gave the game a poxy half spread review and slagged it off. 69% (wait - is that a joke?) is all it got. It's better than that, even if it is a bit of a cross between a platformer and a Schmup.

Plenty of lovely GFX in Rubicon and a decent Manics of Noise SID and SFX. It just doesn't feel as... polished? As HE and FQ. The end of level scene in HE is one of the best things on the #C64!

The game also made the front cover of the mag and looky here Lords of Midnight for FREE on the covertape..?!?!?!? Easiest £2.20 you'll ever spend!

Rubicon

Ahhhh, well, we;ve done HE and FQ, so - R is here on the #C64! I remember seeing this in the "Early Warning" pages of CF and that's all she wrote - I never played it until just then. IMHO, despite it's high production values, it is the weakest of the 3. However, it is still ok.

Commodore FOrmat fared it even worse and this is the budget version, giving it 69%. Very low for a game of such high quality. On the same page it gave Space Gun conversion 89%. What drugs was this spotty little speccy twat snorting..?

Flimbo's Quest

The Age Old Question: Hawkeye vs Flimbo's Quest? I know in which camp I sit. The #C64 is a marvellous machine and it was literally MADE for games like this. Gorgeous production, GFX and SID. Fun and difficult gameplay. Secrets. And a shop with a wizard in it. Winning.

She's a BEAUTY! A couple of errors, I think, but it's a useful map for beginners for sure. Ahhhh, the days of mapping. The Bard's Tale I was my first, probably.

Lords of Midnight, The

Simply one of my favourite #C64 games of all time and it was written on a #48K. SMH. The screen below, when appearing as you are traversing a mountain range, or forest, genuinely instills TERROR. Genius game by Mike Singleton. Available on many modern platforms.

Old Tower

I think I first got this game on XBLA on the #XBOX360 way back when, or perhaps Steam, but this 2020 #C64 version is an absolute MARVEL on the machine. Utterly charming, heavy production values and it plays PERFECTLY. If you've never played it - give it a go, it's CRACKING!

Turns out it was Olli & Lissa 3 I had / played. Don't think I liked it.

Olli & Lissa

Dateline 1987 and a Firebird £1.99 platformer game for the #C64. I never played this back in the day, though, my excellently named "Book of Games for the Commodore 64" says otherwise (see below) - I just played it now. It's madenningly frustratingly playable. Hahaha! ARGH!

So, last night my brother and I went to see our 2nd Bob Dylan Gig in three years. It wasn't great. Which is a shame, as the one 3 years ago really was. So much to deconstruct and not much of it positive - my disappointment is palpable, as is my worry for the artist. My favourite artist. 😐

Ikarus

Wow. I have never heard of this, nor played it. Now I have. Lovely presentation and possibly a decent 2-Ply "Joust" affair for the #C64. Released for free, I think, in 1991. It's fairly interesting, but you really do need to have two playing it. The controls are a bit whack.
