This will be my motto for 2026. Don't startle the day by seizing it, have a coffee and approach it slowly.
Just finished The Night Shift by Robert Enright. Recommended by colleague. A little too 'one man, good intentions, loner, fights crime, lots of guns & ex-army" for me. British Jack Reacher. Once it got going, was OK, but would have liked a bit more intelligence & puzzles and less guns.

The Christmas Appeal by Janice Hallett.
Very quick read, started it yesterday and not reading constantly. Didn't find it was good as others by her. Entertaining enough, but not enthralling. #bookreview

Next book in the DCI Banks series finished. Past Reason Hated by Peter Robinson.
Series is all very similar, but the twists & turns in the investigations make it a good read. Written in the late 80's, but amount of drinking & smoking whilst on duty by police is shocking!

Just finished The Hanging Valley by Peter Robinson. Took about 2 days.
Good standard crime fiction. Less a twist at the end and more solid plot moving along nicely.
Also signed up to Goodreads app.

Just finished Dead Souls by Angela Marsons.
A good police murder story. Lots of competing lines, with various police officers so found that a bit confusing as read over more than a week. Came together satisfyingly at the end, if a bit gung-ho from key police.
From Surbiton Library.

Never liked Brussels sprouts. Decided today (Turkey dinner was boxing day as 3 birds yesterday with normal roast sides) to try what people say about roasting with bacon and garlic oil. Threw in some carrots as well. It was great. I'm gonna definitely do that again.

Just finished The Killer Question by Janice Hallett.
Good fun read using alternative format of texts, police statements and emails.
Started a bit slow and character development took a while (kept having to refer back), but great twists towards the end.

Been to a family wedding at Wilderhope Manor near Much Wenlock in Shropshire. An absolutely lovely building owned by @nationaltrust.org.uk managed by Youth Hostel Association.
Wedding was lovely as well.

I love that these old signs showing destination of Diatrict Line London underground trains still work. Even though the modern version is in the background, I still check this one.

I am not having a good day for a multitude of reasons, all coming together at the same time. I just want to scream it into the void that is my bluesky account! Not for sympathy.

The Kingston River Festival and Kingston Carnival last weekend were both superb. Loads of people out for both of them, enjoying all Kingston has to offer. Culture team at Kingston Council, KREC & River users all worked hard to put on these events, so on behalf of the hoards of attending - thank you.

On this day 1100 years ago King Athelstan was crowned in Kingston upon Thames. He went on to become the first King of all England in 927.
Fair to say this is way more important than William the Conquerer in 1066.
Annoying that we don't seem to teach this in schools, but today was about celebrating.

We got new sofas recently and rather than dump the old ones (which had broken springs, so couldn't give to others) I took it apart for the wood.
Turns out the old arm rests were boxes that with a little modification and some old paint made great new side tables with shelves. Feeling a bit smug! 😁

Role play chairing skills session at recent training went a little askew.
Participants took to their roles a little too enthusiastically. I had to try to manage the most domineering, aggressive and rambling councillors ever seen.
Ended in laughter, so became part chairing skills, part therapy.

Wonderful to see John Azah receive Freedom of Kingston Borough at Kingston Council meeting. John is not only a great person, his work at Kingston Racial Equality Council over decades has made our whole borough a better place. A well deserved honour.
