This, combined with the addition of a weapons detection system at my kids' schools (on top of the steady stream of upsetting news), is making me feel pretty low today. So posting random beautiful pic from the summer for fun

Ever in awe of the oceans, how they sustain the planet and how they continue to inspire and sustain me, even on dark mornings...

This was flagged by my daughter's science teacher using an automated tool -- appreciate that they're checking for plagiarism but for basic facts like this, seems misplaced. While my kid is reading sources and trying to paraphrase, other kids are asking AI to do it, which their tools can't pick up

Was on the @cornelluniversity.bsky.social campus today for the President's Council of Cornell Women, giving students snacks during their study time and telling them about our mentorship program

The #science aboard the R/V Armstrong is nonstop!
The amount of expertise and teamwork required is incredible and is generating a greater understanding of the marine ecosystem and change over time.
< a day to go before onshore life again!

Later this week, I will be joining #science crew of the R/V Armstrong as they explore the waters off the New England Coast. This research cruise is part of reporting for a NEW BOOK I am writing, about field-based research.

It was wonderful to give a talk about Women in Science Now in Towson University's beautiful Science Complex last week. It was an especial treat to connect with the Hill-Lopes Scholars, who had read the book and were full of thoughtful questions about equity in STEM. 🧪 👩‍🔬 @columbiaup.bsky.social

So nauseated and run down by the news right now -- so many upsetting stories and posts -- so need a cleanse. Posting silly doggo photos. Join me please. A small act to help dilute the sludge.

At the President's Council of Cornell Women and a broader alumni event in Philly, meeting the new Provost Kavita Bala, a computer scientist... Love hearing about her early inspiration in science via Sagan/Cosmos, a grant that led to NSF funding for her research, and her thoughts on #AI

Missing Canada already! Just got home from my time in Vancouver, which was capped by an amazing discussion at Science World. Was excited to see families with children in the audience -- and to see such eager participation in "Draw a Scientist." We need to build community for everyone in science! 🧪 👩‍🔬

Enjoying my time here in Vancouver, including an amazing discussion after a talk about #WomeninScience Now at the University of British Columbia yesterday... Tonight, I am giving a talk at Science World, the local science museum and cannot wait! Meanwhile, been taking in the sights!

Great idea for Black Friday or anytime! 👇
In the meantime, have a great Thanksgiving! 🍂
I am grateful for every person I have met over the past year in talking on campuses worldwide about equity & #WomeninScience. And I'm grateful for this new space.
Most grateful this week for time with family!
