Where are the big names that proclaim themselves as brave, bold, as telling things as they are? The network figureheads, the Washington mainstays? Israeli forces have killed some 245 journalists in the past 22 months. Journalists who were also people, just like anyone else, and who had to become bigger than life, in order to justify themselves to viewers thousands of miles away. People who had been forced every single day to report on the devastation of their own land, their own families. People who would cover an airstrike that killed their children and, by sheer necessity, continue to report on the next strike, in the pursuit of convincing the world to act, of the hope of tomorrow being different. How many murdered Palestinian journalists will it take for the mainstream press’s cowardly fever to break?

In their excellent book, The AI Con, @emilymbender.bsky.social and @alexhanna.bsky.social cite useful guidance from Garance Burke and @karenhao.bsky.social on how to approach AI hype. While directed to journalists, these are questions that we should all ask of our tools:
past years focusing on AI and working towards improving coverage from the industry writ large. Garance Burke of the Associated Press (AP) developed a chapter for the AP stylebook–a canonical reference for many journalists inside and outside the AP–on how to talk about AI. Burke instructs journalists to “get back to basics” and ask many of the same questions we pose here: How do these systems actually work? Where are they deployed? How well do they perform? Are they regulated? Who’s making the money as a result? And who’s benefitting? And also, very importantly, which communities may be negatively impacted by these tools? Karen Hao, one of the foremost journalists on AI coverage, has been working with the Pulitzer Centre to develop a program to train 1000 journalists in covering AI over the next two years with the purpose of holding companies to account. Hao’s work on the data labor behind AI and the drama within OpenAI’s walls has been crucial for understanding how this industry operates. In her training, Hao encourages journalists to focus on the people affected by these tools: “If we want a technology that is so consequential to actually benefit all of humanity–as OpenAI likes to say–the best way to understand how to do that is by covering the communities that are the most vulnerable in shaping the technologies thus far.” This effort is critical, as it plans to unsettle the centrality of the tech narrative around the Global North and back to the Majority World, where much of the labor occurs. It also aims to dispel the (intentional) obfuscation achieved by lumping all these technologies under the moniker of “AI”. And it ensures that the main story about AI is the human one, not the technical one.

OpenAI has to be the most insufferable company in the world. They can steal from the whole world & guzzle all resources. But no one can give them a taste of their own medicine even a little bit.

How long till they use this to say give us even more resources & this is why we can't release anything.
