So, no, I don't think the issue with Frankenstein's script is its sincerity or its willingness to have its characters speak its emotions earnestly. I think my issue is that the way it tells its viewers what those emotions and characterizations and themes are meant to be steps on both its characters' actual actions and on the more interesting visual themes in the film. In telling you exactly what you are meant to take away from it, the film buries so many other interesting things that it is doing at the same time.

Few could object to any of this. But the person it describes—a kind and conscientious sort, who aspires to make a decent living and who looks after their loved ones—seems blessedly gender-free. So why make this about manhood? Even the Boy Scouts have gone coed.

text that reads: I hope it's clear from the paragraph above that I don't disagree, exactly, with pop-cultural consensus opinions about Lanthimos. But I don't think those opinions give a thorough enough account of what Lanthimos is doing, especially with Bugonia. His movies aren't empty vessels for hatred. Rather, they are uncomfortable artistic objects for a reason. They have themes, and that discomfort is how they make you feel those themes. What Bugonia and particularly that scene with Teddy and Casey make clear to me is that Lanthimos is not merely interested in politeness and power as a simple juxtaposition. I think he's interested in the inherent irony and hypocrisy of attempting to map morality onto a power relationship, how the terms of polite engagement are so often an excuse for the powerful to sleep easy at night after doing what they were going to anyway.

the harry potter shop, at 22nd and broadway, on google maps a stunning number of, this is not a euphemism, toilet stores clustered around that same intersection

I see that same spirit in the seed art at the State Fair. It is quintessentially Minnesotan because it is art made with love and labor by people whose lives and politics are at odds with the stereotypes that dog their home and who nonetheless refuse to cede the ground of Minnesota’s symbols and folkways to those same stereotypes. It is joyful and defiant and just silly enough to take seriously. It is a deep and stubborn kind of rootedness: insisting on your right to call a contested land your home, to speak your ideas into its language. It is a form of art that uses the signifiers of calcification to say that better things are actually possible. (Which isn’t that far off from what Fargo is doing, come to think of it.)

That’s my fundamental issue with SNW treating itself not just as an original series prequel but as one enormous piece of fanservice: It is too often content to show us a thing we recognize rather than commenting on that thing, and thus to treat the familiar thing it’s showing us as an end in itself. That’s something plenty of people like, sure. But it’s not good television, and it’s starting to really get on my nerves.
